***Clarks Desert Trek / Trojan Edition***
Released in 2012 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Desert Trek. Clarks also collaborated with UK's legendary reggae record label "Trojan Records", by stamping their logo on both sides of the shoe. They decided it would be fitting if they got together since both these British companies have deep ties to Jamaican reggae culture. The release date was not only for the Desert Trek's 40th Anniversary, but also Jamaica's 50th year of independence. #clarksoriginals #clarksdeserttrek #BankRobbers #TrojanRecords #IslandRecords #DukeReidTheTrojan #TreasureIsle #unitygraph #ska #rocksteady #reggae

Lacksley Castell - Morning Glory LP 1982 Negus Roots label (2005 reissue shown) / Waterhouse is a district in the southwest of the city of Kingston, it has long been revered for its contribution to local music, it was home to the great Black Uhuru & the location of King Tubby's famous studio, to name but two examples. Waterhouse was initially a middle class residential neighborhood, but with the passage of time & negative political influence came a decline in property values & the area became prone to violence, inspiring the nickname Firehouse. Against this backdrop emerged a singular style of singing, unique to the district, known as the Waterhouse Style, characterized by fully committed deliveries combined with wailing harmonic scat singing, best shown by Michael Rose with the group Black Uhuru. Other singers were also highly successful in this style such as Junior Reid & Barrington Levy, next in line were the Youthman group of this style including singers like Horace Martin & the subject of this album: Lacksley Castell. Born & raised in Waterhouse, Castell was brought by Hugh Mundell to Augustus Pablo to record his first songs in 1978 around the age of nineteen, over the next two years Castell would continue to record for various producers including fellow Waterhouse resident Prince Jammy, who was then just entering into production & would license "What A Great Day" to Dave Hendley's Sufferer's Heights label for Castell's first high profile international release. In 1979, Castell would make his first recordings for two further Waterhouse natives, now residents in London, brothers Michael 'Negus' & Robert 'Flacko' Palmer, owners of the Negus Roots label. The Revolutionaries - Dub Off 'Har' Blouse & Skirt Volume 3 LP 1981 Rub-A-Dub label (2015 Germain Records - Bond Export label reissue shown) / As discussed, Donovan Germain made his first entry into the music business around age nineteen in New York City as an employee of Keith's Records on St. Johns Place in Brooklyn in 1971. Gaining valuable insight & experience over the next several years through distribution deals with Jamaica based producers like Augustus 'Gussie' Clarke, Lloyd 'Spiderman' Campbell, & Sonia Pottinger (of High Note Records & owner of Treasure Isle Studio from 1974 onward). By the second half of the decade, Germain decided to enter production himself with his Germain Revolutionary Sounds label which although he distributed it from NYC, the recordings were done in Jamaica using island based artists & musicians. Germain followed his own path in production which formed a sort of connection between the sparse production values of Early Dancehall & the more sophisticated Lovers Rock and other so called 'big people music' popular with middle age Jamaicans, this was all then rooted in the NYC Reggae aesthetic of guitar & keyboard led understated rhythms. For this he employed artists like Joy White, Janet Kay, The Tamlins, & veteran Highland 'Dobby' Dobson. This is not to say that Germain didn't also concentrate on more socially conscious material, his first real production hits were with the group Cultural Roots comprised of Hubert Brooks, Norman Gallimore, & Wade 'Jimmy' Dyce with whom he worked from 1978 into the early 1980's eventually delivering a number of 7" & 12" singles as well as a pair of vocal albums & one dub LP. While Germain issued plenty of vocal & deejay (rap) tracks in this early phase of his career as a producer, he also issued a fair amount of instrumental & dub material with a fair quantity of his single releases appearing as 12" discomixes complete with extended dub remixes. 3 years ago today, we released The Big Smoke by UK reggae heavyweights @gentlemansdubclub

GDC's 2nd full-length album, and 1st release with Easy Star Records, is a dreamlike haze of dub, reggae, and dance. The Big Smoke features big tunes like "One Road," slow burners like "Afraid of the Dark," and profound instrumental gems like "Enter The Chamber" and "Nocturnal."⠀

We'll be lost in The Big Smoke all day today. And speaking of Lost, make sure to pre-order The Gents’ new album Lost In Space here: http://lostinspace.gentlemansdubclub.com/⠀

The Revolutionaries - Dub Out Her Blouse & Skirt, Volume 1 LP 1979 Revolutionary Sounds label (2015 Germain Records - Bond Export label reissue shown) / Donovan Germain was born in Jamaica but relocated to the USA in his youth where he settled in New York City. His first entry into the music business would occur around age nineteen when he began working as a counter clerk in 1971 at the popular Keith's Records located on St. Johns Place in Brooklyn, NYC. With a sizable population of Jamaican & Caribbean expatriates living in NYC, there existed a significant demand for Jamaican records which was satisfied by shops like Keith's, Brad Osborne's Record Den, the Chin family's Randy's Records (Chin-Randy later VP Records), & numerous other smaller stores. For island based producers & labels looking for foreign distribution, the Chins handled the majority of releases but smaller operations like Keith's Records & Osborne's Clocktower imprint also made an impact with popular recordings they licensed for USA release. After working with well known entities like Sonia Pottinger's High Note operation, Lloyd 'Spiderman' Campbell, & Augustus 'Gussie' Clarke, Germain would enter production for himself on his Germain Revolutionary Sounds label in 1978 by which point he was the owner of Keith's Records. Initially using studios like Channel One & Treasure Isle, Germain employed The Revolutionaries session players led by drummer Lowell 'Sly' Dunbar to back his early material from artists like Joy White, The Tamlins, deejay (rapper) Wade 'Trinity' Brammer, & a fair quantity of instrumental & dub releases. In 1978, Germain would also make his first tracks with the vocal group Cultural Roots comprised of Hubert Brooks, Norman Gallimore, & Wade 'Jimmy' Dyce leading to their 1980 album debut Revolutionary Sounds & its companion Cultural Roots Dub LP. I crossed paths with a reggae legend, Chinna Smith, and he kept me guessing.

This man has played guitar on an astounding number of reggae records... active for 50 years. Recorded with Bob Marley from ‘75 to ‘76... And you’d have no idea what’s in his jukebox

Misty in Roots are a British roots reggae band formed in Southall, London in the mid 1970s. Their first album was 1979's Live at the Counter Eurovision, a record full of #Rastafari songs. It was championed by @bbc1xtra #DJJohnPeel, helping to bring roots #reggae to a white audience. At this early stage, the band was a collective with five lead singers and various musicians, though by the time of the second album proper the band had slimmed down to just three members. Along with @steelpulseofficial ,@legendaryaswad , #Matumbi, #Cimarons and @blackslatereggae , #MistyinRoots were one of the most popular #Englishreggae bands of the late 1970s.

In 1979 Clarence Baker, a member of the collective, was severely beaten and injured by the SPG during a protest in Southall against a National Front march. The punk band #TheRuts, who were partners of and had their debut single released by the People Unite cooperative, honoured him in their song "Jah War" which was released as a single and on their album The Crack the same year.

Following their debut, Misty In Roots released four studio albums through the 1980s. The band had two #BBCRadio1 "In Concert" appearances in 1983 and 1985. They were invited to play in #Zimbabwe in 1982 in recognition of their support for the independence movement, and were the first reggae band to tour #SouthAfrica, #Poland, and #Russia. After a break from recording in the next decade the band returned with a new mini-album Roots Controller in 2002. continue to play concerts as of 2014.
