🍎Opened in 1931, the Red Apple Rest was a restaurant that served as an iconic rest stop for vacationers traveling from New York City to the grand hotels of the Catskills (think Dirty Dancing!). The restaurant thrived in the 1940s and 50s, before the introduction of the NYS Thruway in the mid-1950s. The decline of the Catskills as a destination and the loss of traffic it brought caused the Rest to lose customers. Sold from its original owner, Reuben Freed, in 1984, the Red Apple Rest finally closed its doors in 2006.
Ever since I was a kid, I always remember passing the Red Apple Rest on my way to the Renaissance Faire. I would love to see someone reopen it as a restaurant, farmers market, and local goods store!

Passed by here hundreds of times, finally found a crummy enough day to stop by for some pics. #abandonedplaces #redapplerest #hudsonvalley #roadsidestop

The red apple rest was a mid point oasis in the trip from metro New York to the “mountains” (borscht belt). It was on route 17 locally known as the quickway. #catskills #borschtbelt #mountains #quickway #roadtrip #roadside #midcentury #redapplerest #abandonment_issues #abandoned_junkies #abandon_seekers #aband0n_all_h0pe #abandonedplaces
