I first learned about Koko The Gorilla as a kid through the book she is looking at (Koko’s Kitten)in the first photo of my photo series tribute to her. I was instantly fascinated by her and her ability to use sign language and convey feelings and thoughts.
Koko is being laid to rest today at the sanctuary she called her home in Northern California. She is being buried next to her former companion, Michael The Gorilla. Her “mother”, Penny Patterson, “father”, Ron Cohn, companion, Ndume The Gorilla, and her cats, Ms. Black and Ms. Gray, that she “adopted” in 2015 will be in attendance to celebrate her life.
She maybe was the most famous gorilla ever. During her life she met Robin Williams, Mr. Rogers, Betty White, and Flea to name a few celebrities. Each one of them remarked how meeting her was an experience they would never forget.
