June 5, 2003: This is a photo of me with my mom on the day I became one of the learned elite — the 83.2% of Americans with a high-school diploma or equivalent. I recently discovered this photo during my ongoing project to digitize old photos.
My wife and I had very different responses to it. When I saw it, I remembered the day very clearly. My mom had given me a copy of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Suess, a book that has been on my bookshelf no matter where I’ve lived since.
Not that I needed to be remembered, but it also made me feel grateful to have a family — especially my mom — that, although of limited means, provided me with all the support they could to help me live a good life.
My wife’s response to the picture? “That’s you?!? It actually looks like Ethan Embry. I don’t believe that’s you.” Wow, bro. So not cool. Sorry I’m now a bloated old man with a face weathered by years of hard living to the point of being unrecognizable and no longer a barely legal boytoy. I’m sorry I can no longer pass for a ‘Tiger Beat’ pin-up.
Also, Ethan Embry hasn’t aged too well either. Look it up, dude.
Well, looks like Abby is in the doghouse. Wish her well.
