ARCHETYPES - Essential to life and presenting
I personally have always loved superheroes and comic books, my favourite being Superman!
When I think deeply about why is I love the character, I realise it goes beyond him having awesome powers. There are so many characters with awesome powers, but the reason why I connect with Superman is the archetypes and ideals he encapsulates. I view myself as someone with great power and potential with the gifts the universe /God has given me. Just like Superman, I care about not using my power for evil, to not manipulate just for monetary gain and always able to find another way that dies not sacrifice my values.
Archetypes are so powerful because they form reference points of character, personality, values and behaviour that we as humans can model and strive for through the journey of life.
They also remind us that our flaws, which our ego tries to trick us into believing to be completely unique to us and that no one can ever understand, is actually quite common. So much so, they can be placed into characters which have a surviving popularity that transcends time and culture.
This popularity, in my opinion, is evidence of just how connected we all are. It speaks to us all despite how different we seem to be.
To be a great presenter, it is so useful to decide upon what archetypes best represent the different facets of your character. When you educate, are you the the Champion of motivation (ie Superman) like Tony Robbins, or are you the no nonsense rational thinking (ie Batman) like Gary vee?
Finding the archetype and character whom represents your style will go a long way in your preparation as it gives you all the clues on what sort of language, voice and movement you should use. It will influence your choices and help you understand the brand which is you and how you want to convey yourself to the world. However, most importantly, it can act as a compass in guiding you on life's journey. I'm not religious so I don't ask "what would Jesus do?" I ask, "What would Superman do?"
