Throughout my amateur and professional career I have trained and then taught to turn the shoulder. We teach mostly by saying turn your hip, rotate your foot. The mechanics for follow through actually come from the shoulder. A tremendous amount of power and reach can be achieved by allowing the mechanical chain to be led by the shoulder and end with a bent knee rotation of the body.
Like a power cord, power comes from the feet, up through the legs and is expressed in a snapping or thrusting motion by the time it gets to the arms. My point is that most will continue to over rotate the hip and foot and actually not carry through with the shoulder. #miketyson and #ramondekkers are great examples of fighters that give every inch of shoulder commitment in a punch to devastating effect.
