A quaint sleepy graveyard lies snuggled in one corner of Kashmere Gate and away from the hustle-bustle of the city – a piece of forgotten history. This is the Nicholson Graveyard, a little Christian cemetery that was established in 1857.
.
The cemetery is named after John Nicholson, the Brigadier General of the Bengal Native Infantry Unit, who played a cardinal role in squashing the Indian sepoys’ mutiny in the Rebellion of 1857. He had punished the Indian mutineers with great severity and is famously quoted to have said, “I would inflict the most excruciating tortures I could think of on them with a perfectly easy conscience...flaying alive, impaling or burning.” His grave today lies caged and is a protected monument and a reminder of the brutal past of Delhi's History.
.
Nicholson is also known for leading an infantry unit in the Indo-Afghan War of 1839-1842 and later effortlessly thwarting the forces of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal king.
.
Although he is known for his merciless ways in Indian history and a psychopath by a few, the Nicholson cemetery is flooded with serenity.
.
Some tombstones have various inscriptions and designs on them, quotes from the Bible while a few others have little poems about the deceased describing their personalities or even their deaths and one of them even saying "She loved India".

"I Will Never Beg!" says homeless Sikh man in Delhi
.
He is an Oxford graduate who shifted to India on the insistence of his brother in the Sixties - 60s
.
Today 76-year-old Raja Singh Phull is living a nomad's life -- sleeping at New Delhi Railway 🚉, getting ready at a Delhi Government's sauchalaya at Connaught Place-the first one on the left as you hit CP from Panchkuian Road & sits through the day at Visa Centre next to Shivaji Stadium Airport Metro Station at Baba Khadak Singh Marg next to Hanuman Mandir! "I fill forms, help and guide people earning from 0 to 100 rupees, sometimes more!"
.
His eye sight & his legs are failing yet he pulls on barely making his both ends meet! He leaves Railway 🚂 station at 6- 15 am. Will be at CP Sauchalaya by 6-40 am going through daily cores, washing his clothes tying his turban with the help of a pocket mirror and have a cup of tea ☕! If there is money a rusk or two is his breakfast
.
There are days that Raja Singh has gone without proper food! "You are not well & there is no earning, you will go without a square meal ," said the old man
.
What about kids & family? After moving to India he & bro BS Phull tried hands at various businesses! While brother was more info drinking "I did lot of hardwork & sent two of my sons for studies abroad,"he adds! Raja Singh even took loans for his children! Today they are in UK & US well settled with firangi wives not having time for their father who is living by the roadside in Delhi
.
A good Raja Singh a staunch Sikh too! He has been attached to 'Guru Ghar' all his life! He avoids partaking Langar at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib! "I earn and buy my food. For Langar I need to contribute. If I'm unable I do not have right to eat there." There are, however, occasions when there is no work & you are dependent on Bhandaras at Hanuman Temple & Gurdwara's Langar
.
Raja Singh has no one. No help has come from Government. He has got a cell but he cannot get a SIM due to no Aadhar card & permanent address! He has only one prayer, "God should never force me to beg"!
.
Those willing to contribute can contact 7042715788 ☑️! He is still willing to work if there it comes with a place to stay! Any takers

On an average, we spend 2 hours commuting every day to work. We decided to use that time for for me-time, relax time, catch-up time... we chucked our car today, and took the metro. It has been a comfortable ride. 😍

Chota Batashewala Mahal is an unknown person's tomb(probably a member of the Mughal empire) dating back to the early Mughal period. It is part of the Batashewala complex.
.
An interesting question that arises as to why the tombs got their names as Batashewala.
