Happy Birthday, Alfred Nobel!
Nobel (1833-1896) was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 21, 1833. His family was descended from Olof Rudbeck, the best-known technical genius in Sweden in the 17th century, an era in which Sweden was a great power in northern Europe. Nobel was fluent in several languages, and wrote poetry and drama. Nobel was also very interested in social and peace-related issues, and held views that were considered radical during his time. Alfred Nobel’s interests are reflected in the prize he established.

Kroppen er for mange kvinner det farligste de har. I snitt ni kvinner oppsøker hver dag voldtektsmottaket Lavender House i Mathare i Nairobi.

(Photo: Rune Eraker)

"We are journalists, not civil servants. Our duty is not to hide the dirty secrets of the state but to hold those accountable on behalf of the people."– Can Dundar
The Turkish journalist, columnist and documentarian Can Dündar visited the Nobel Peace Center in September. He is featured in our exhibition "Tell the world about us". Dündar was the editor-in-chief of center-left #Cumhuriyet newspaper until August 2016, he was arrested in November 2015 after his newspaper published footage showing the Turkish State Intelligence MİT sending weapons to Syrian Islamist fighters.
On 6 May 2016, there was an assassination attempt outside a Istanbul courthouse, where Dündar had just been defending himself against charges of treason. The assailant was stopped by Dündar's wife and a member of parliament, before he could fire more than two shots. On the same day, Dündar was sentenced to imprisonment for five years and 10 months for ″leaking secret information of the state.″ Turkey is activly seeking his and there was a warrant in absentia issued in 2016. Can Dündar was nominated for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. (Photo: @N.frilseth)

Why are Nobel Peace Prize laureates called laureates and not winners? The word “Laureate” refers to the laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and honor. It is a round wreath made of interlocking branches and leaves of the bay laurel, an aromatic broadleaf evergreen. In Greek mythology, the god Apollo is represented wearing a laurel wreath on his head. In Ancient Greece, laurel wreaths were awarded to victors as a sign of honor – both in athletic competitions and in poetic meets.
Did you know that this Nobel Peace Prize medal is on display at the Nobel Peace Center. It was awarded to Christian Lous Lange 1921. He shared the Peace Prize with the Swede Hjalmar Branting. They both wanted to strengthen the new world organization the League of Nations. (Photo: Johannes Granseth / #NobelPeaceCenter)

Eraker uses an analogue camera and 35 mm film. The exhibition’s almost 100 photographs are in black and white, and are accompanied by texts written by journalist Linda Hove Strand. Sound artist Tine Eide has created the exhibition’s sound effects. Its designers are Runa Klock and Anita Myhrvold .
“Tell the world about us” is being staged 70 years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Amnesty International, which has helped with the exhibition, itself received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for its work to promote human rights. (Photo: @N.frilseth)

September 26th is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The @goodbyenukes (ICAN) campaigners are working hard behind the scenes to encourage as many countries as they can to sign and ratify the treaty on this day. So what can you do? Every time someone speaks up against nuclear weapons and says: “I believe nuclear weapons are inhumane, immoral and illegal. All countries should join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons” it chips away at their legitimacy. And specific, because there is a really clear thing you want them to do: sign the nuclear Ban Treaty as soon as possible.

The Nobel Field -As soon as a new Peace Prize laureate is annouced, we start the updating of our permanent exhibitions. At first in the The Nobel Field, often named “the heart of the Nobel Peace Center”. Here, all laureates are presented on their own screen, surrounded by thousand small lights. Designer David Small is behind the concept, together with architect David Adjaye. He says the ambiance in the room is more important than the technology. “We wanted to create something timeless. Here you can meet all the Peace Prize laureates from today and going back more than a century – all in the same room – and they even speak to each other.” (Photo: @N.frilseth)

Today, September 21st, is the International Day of Peace and today we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This foundational document is a reminder that peace takes root when people are free from hunger, poverty and oppression and can thrive and prosper. A peaceful society is one where there is justice and equality for everyone. Peace will enable a sustainable environment to take shape and a sustainable environment will help promote peace.

So what can you do? You can engage by speaking up when others are at risk and stand with others’ human rights at work, in school and around the dinner table. You can reflect how each of us can stand up for rights, every day. Human rights are everyone's rights.
Happy International Day of Peace.
