Martyrs
Loughborough, #BritishEmpire
Circa. #1933.
.
Yosef & Biniam Werkneh (you won’t miss them) posing for a photo with their cricket team in 1933 Loughborough, UK
.
Part 5 of 5 (read 1-4 for background)
.
Hakim’s relatives examined his birth mark & verified that indeed the man standing before them acting all weirded-out was their lost son
.
But his family never was worried about his adherence to the English culture they assured themselves he would come around
.
Just to reassure herself, his grandmother probably recalled Jeremiah 13:23 “Can an Ethiopian change his identity or the leopard his spots?” I think not!!!
.
His grandmother, soon as she confirmed his identity, thought of several ways to bring this “Inglizz Na Ethiopiawi” back to the fold
.
In fact, his grandmother knew exactly what needed to be done first. Looking down, pointing her finger into the sky, she exclaimed “Mist,” “Gondere Mist” (a wife, one from Gondar)
.
Poor Hakim was confused. He did not know what to do or how to act. How would an Ethiopian act in this situation, should I be excited? Or run back to India
.
He was dumb founded at the absence of courtesy or asking him his opinions. “Did these people know that it is my life?”
.
He soon discovered that in #Ethiopia, there is no such thing as “my life or my business,” it’s “everybody’s business.” & Everyone Business is your business, “Errrrbodies Business”
.
All his Victorian boundaries were stepped & trampled on by his friends & family (that’s one way to bring him to to the reality of Abyssinian culture)
.
Anyways, before they could find him a bride, he met & fell in love with Qatsalla Tullu, his wife & the mother of his children
.
Soon, Hakim became more #Ethiopian than some Ethiopians. He learned how to speak Amharigna & #Oromiffa
.
He became a family man with some 14 kids & a large household.
.
He was made the governor of Chercher in Hararghe. There he built roads, schools, hospital, & using his connections brought many teachers from India
.
Yosef & Biniam died in 1937. They were captured & placed in prison. Then, the Italians executed them. Italians took their photo right before executing them

I just wanna give a shoutout to @osu_umn for letting me perform.
Honestly when I was writing this walalo in Oromiffa, it was everything I felt about the Oromo Struggle.
Knowing my dad was in the audience made me emotional cause his the reason I do what I do. My parents done went through hell while in Ethiopia from being tortured, put in jail for no reason etc.. I could of lost my father in 80s while he was in war, along side the Oromo Liberation Front. This is an act to show my parents this is my fight too.
Those who don’t understand Oromiffa, my message is three words: Unity is Power 🙏🏾 #oromo #oromiffa #oromoprotests #oromogirlmagic #oromorevolution #oromopride

‘Divide and rule could only
tear us apart
In every man’s chest
There beats a heart’

Imagine the #revolution if Bob Marley sang in #African languages.

I went home recently - a stealth (no time to chill in #Bole) in and out trip - but enough to see burnt out buses by the roadside and large stones placed across already rocky rural roads that I was told were put there by youth bent on ensuring trade between villages couldn’t happen because neighbors were at war with each other ... and each side had (has) enough justification (doesn’t matter if it’s right or wrong or who designed the latest flare-up) to keep things hostile ... and most ominously the elders were (are) quiet, not a prayerful silence, but a hush tinged with bitter resignation —and that has never been a good sign... I grew up listening to #AfricaUnite and #Zimbabwe, #War, #RedemptionSong - and those Songs of Freedom have always been source of inspiration and an affirmation that good will triumph over evil.
And so on this cold (for real) Miami morning (temperature has dropped like crazy - where’s Georgie with the fyah?) my thoughts and prayers fly over the Atlantic to those mountains, valleys, rivers, where it all started.
And I’m thinking how good and pleasant it would be if #BobMarley sang in #Amharic, #Oromiffa, #Somali, #Tigrigna, #Mende, #Timni, #Hausa, #Zulu, #Shona... #peace #ethiopia #africa #miami #artbaselmiami #prophet #roots #rasta #fyah #bnw
