Atomic Blonde (2017)
Rating - 6.7/10
• Atomic Blonde is a stylish spy thriller with a great cast lead by the incomparable Charlize Theron. When you describe it like that it seems like it would make for a better film than we actually received. The first problem with the film is the narrative structure. The film presents the story through an interview involving the main character in which they cut back to consistently to set up each act. For me this choice completely takes the suspense out of the film and made me feel detached from the story as it was void of consequence for the main character due to her being alive and well in the interview. This lack of suspense wasn’t the only effect the narrative structure had on the film, it also make the narrative feel jaded as it cut back to the interview after and before most pivotal scenes. That being said from the cast to the action sequences and the score there is definitely some things to like about the film. But overall I felt the film had some flaws that were too glaring to not over shadow the positives.
