Rainbow Falls | Wailuku River 🌈 ﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏
Legend says that Hina, the Goddess Mother of the Demigod Maui, lived in the cave beneath this waterfall. A lizard god called Mo’o Kuna mistreated her many times and one day placed a huge boulder at the foot of her cave so that it began to flood. With the help of her son Maui she was able to escape and both called on the Volcano Goddess Pele to punish Kuna for his malice. Molten lava flowed through the riverbeds and Kuna died. As fate would have it, the small island directly beneath this waterfall is said to be Mo’o Kuna, forever held in the river by the waterfall he abused.
Hina had designed beautiful, colorful kapa (fabric made by native Hawaiians) clothing in her cave. It’s said that you can see her rainbow kapas flowing all along the waterfalls’ mist. On a sunny morning with your back facing the sun, you can see these rainbows reflected in the mist.
