Two years ago Sophie Blackall wrote each one of my students a letter after she saw their reaction to Finding Winnie winning our Mock Caldecott Medal.
Those kids are now fifth graders, and I am now a fifth grade teacher. One of those kids brought in the letter that Sophie sent him two years ago to show his friends before we watched the livestream of the announcement of the 2018 Caldecott Medal.
This small moment in our classroom is having a big impact on me. I feel blessed to be able to hang out with young readers each and every day. They teach me so much, and they inspire me daily.
Congrats to all the winners today. I hope that you continue to honor and value each and every one of your readers. They are watching your every move.
