Happy Birthday and thank you MDC
Miami Dade College (f/k/a Dade County Junior College) opened its doors 58 years ago today to 1,428 students. The building was less than glamorous as it was part of a farm and therefore referred to as “Chicken Coop College.” From the beginning, the school had an “open door” policy and a diverse student body. In fact, it was the first integrated junior college in the state of Florida. Tuition at the time was free to Dade County residents.
The college didn’t take long to grow its student body and campuses. By the mid 60s, enrollment was at 15,000 and the school started to build it’s Kendall campus. Currently the college proudly reports enrollment at 165,000 within its 9 campuses. It took the college 41 years to welcome its 1 millionth student but only twelve additional years to welcome its 2 millionth. With these achievements it’s not surprising that it’s the largest learning institution in the state and has conferred well over 311,000 degrees. But the most impressive statistic of all is its commitment to “open door.” Of a student body that has 51% of its incoming students needing developmental educational coursework in reading, writing and/or algebra, they collective report an 87% satisfactory GPA within their first year of transfer into the State of Florida’s University System. I for one am one of those that that experienced the turn around. Without MDC(C), I would not have had the opportunity of higher education, much less of becoming a lawyer.
