Do you have historical photos, video, audio recordings or memorabilia that is significant to African American/ Black history in San Antonio? If so, we NEED you! We- the makers of “Message to the People: A Story of Malcolm X” are working on a new documentary film celebrating the contributions Black People have made to the Fabric of San Antonio, Texas.
As the 7th largest city in the United States, with a population of approximately 1.5 million San Antonio is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. With approximately 7% of the population being black- there is a rich history in SATX that is often forgotten or ignored. “When we think about the history of African Americans in San Antonio, we are often too quick to relegate it to the city's east side. But - as Everett Fly has discovered - that is far too narrow a view for a city with roots going back 300 plus years.” — TPR Interview May 9, 2016
With the support of the Carver Library as our base, we will be hosting a community event to gather information, pictures, video footage and memorabilia. Please bring whatever you have that may be of use to us as we piece together the puzzle of our unique history.
We will NOT keep any of your materials, we will only scan/take photos of your items, catalog them and return them to you.
We will also be interviewing those of you who would like to contribute your stories and memories of history relevant to black people here in San Antonio. If you know of someone who is well versed in this subject or has a great story to tell PLEASE, share this event with them and invite them to attend.
Don’t miss your opportunity to tell OUR own story in order to educate and empower our young people to understand their great heritage; so that they will be equipped to handle the responsibility of extending our great legacy into the future.
