THIS THING CALLED CORRUPTION
....
"... Corruption has been so interwoven in our political and economic fabric that Nigeria has taken pride of place on several lists of the most corrupt countries in the world. It is a cloak that we have wrapped around ourselves for so long, that it now forms part of the country’s identity.

What exactly is corruption? Merriam Webster dictionary online defines corruption as dishonest or illegal behaviour especially by powerful people (such as government officials or police officers); or inducement to wrong by improper or unlawful means (such as bribery); or a departure from the original or from what is pure or correct. When we talk about... READ MORE ON www.mhng.com.ng, LINK IN BIO

PARTY PRIMARIES: THE DAY AFTER
Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seems to have learnt some lessons going by the outcomes of most of its primaries. Aside a few states where the exercise was marred by crisis, the primaries were relatively credible. But one cannot say the same for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) which circumvented its own rules such that the wife of the president, Mrs Aisha Buhari has come out to publicly excoriate the party. “It is disheartening to note that some aspirants used their hard-earned money to purchase nomination forms, got screened, cleared and campaigned vigorously yet found....READ MORE ON www.mhng.com.ng, LINK IN BIO

EXPERTS SHARE TIPS FOR VERIFYING YOUR OWN WRITING WITHOUT A DEDICATED FACT-CHECKING TEAM
...
"It is a journalist’s job to report with fairness and accuracy, separating what’s true from what isn’t, and contextualizing facts and opinions appropriately. To achieve that, editorial fact-checking — the verification process of sources and information included in a story — is an essential process for all reporters and editors. “In the best case scenario, a person other than the writer/editor/producer will do the... DEMOCRACY AS VIOLENCE

To keep gangs running, policians spend milions on arms to intimidate their opponents and hold communities to ransome.
After elections, arms are left in the hands of rampaging youths who put them into uses to ensure their survival and economic sustenance.

The trend is that after elections are won, promises made to the young men are not kept, resulting sometimes in clashes between them and their formal principals.
Like in the Niger Delta, a seed of discord was sown in Asari Dokubo and Tom Ateke, resulting in serious arms struggle in the streets of Port Harcourt.
Till the present, democracy in Rivers is validated by its use of extreme violence.

PDP 2018 PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY : FORETELLING THE OUTCOME "the PDP has vowed to regain power in 2019, but two major challenges stands in her way. The party must present a credible presidential candidate and defeat incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari at the polls.

Thirteen political heavyweights are struggling for PDP’s ticket and efforts to present a consensus candidate proved abortive. The party is on the verge of conducting a presidential primary to elect the one who will confront Buhari. This piece weighs the chance of the candidates and foretells the outcome.

The thirteen aspirants jostling for the PDP presidential ticket are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Governors Aminu Tambuwal and Ibrahim Dakwambo of Sokoto and Gombe States, and ex-Governors Attahiru Bafarawa, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Ahmed Markafi, Jonah Jang, and Sule Lamido of Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau and Jigawa states respectively. Others are former Senate President David Mark, former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki and Stanley Osifo from Edo State. The PDP presidential aspirants are mainly northerners. The party zoned the ticket to the north in order to lessen Buhari’s(sic) vote in the region. The two digit number of aspirants struggling for PDP’s ticket is an indication that the party’s(sic) umbrella is large and strong enough to manage all manner of persons, burden and character.

Except PDP presents a credible candidate to Nigerians, it will be difficult for the party to....READ MORE on www.mhng.com.ng, LINK IN BIO

“The first time I was offered a journalism job in Nigeria, the newspaper owner suggested that I supplement my income with bribes. He told me: ‘I’m giving you a platform. Use what you have to get what you need.’ I knew then that the rumors were true. Journalism in this country was corrupted. There was no idealism. Reporters were writing stories for money. And even more damaging, they were killing stories for money. I didn’t want to participate. I felt it would be more ethical to just find a corporate job. But in 2008, I was given the opportunity to manage a new paper founded by Nigeria’s only Pulitzer Prize winner—Dele Olojede. The paper was called Next. And we tried to change things. We hired young people who were untainted by the culture. Half of them were women. We paid them well and we trained them well. Ethics came first. Accepting gifts was absolutely forbidden. Our paper survived for three years. During that time, we broke major stories every single week. We exposed all sorts of corruption. But we were targeted for our success. Our reporters were detained. Our board members were threatened. The government leaned on our advertisers, and they withdrew one by one. Eventually we were forced to close. But for three years we set the pace. We created a mold. And I believe we changed the media landscape. Investigative journalism is stronger now. Many of our journalists have gone on to start amazing publications of their own. The paper may have been short lived, but I know it had an impact. Revolution is too strong of a word-- but we definitely shook the table.” (Lagos, Nigeria) - @Regran_ed from @humansofny
