Best part about graduating? Throwing the cap! Worst part about throwing the cap? Getting it caught in a tree or hitting yourself with it! 😂 #celebrationtime #graduation #lbsc #capthrowfail #luckilyididnthitmyself

Movies 2018 - 238. Walkabout (1971; written by Edward Bond; directed by Nicolas Roeg)

After their father commits suicide in the middle of the Australian outback, two siblings find their way home with the help of a young Aboriginal man. I want to start off my review addressing my use of the word “aboriginal”. Not being from Australia, I don’t know if this is the proper term to use. All of the material I found online about the film still uses this word, and not “indigenous.” I will write the rest of the review addressing this character by the actor’s name, David Gulpilil. Walkabout is a fascinating film that attempts to offer a point of view on a great many things, some more successfully than others. All three children at the center of the film do phenomenal work, giving much more than what would be expected of children of their age. It demands that these characters face death, a fear of the unknown, blossoming sexuality, and racial and cultural inequality. Everything is out through the filter of that cultural misunderstanding. Jenny Agutter and Lic Roeg are brought up in typical white, well-to-do Australia, while David Gulpilil lives off the land. We are constantly witness to juxtaposition, showing how Gulpilil hunts for food and resources, and must do so by hand, while the white people revel in excess and fail to appreciate where their food comes from and why they have it at all. It almost feels as if Agutter and Roeg don’t quite appreciate just how importance Gulpilil’s presence is to their survival, which feels like a larger statement on the cultural divide as a whole. There is a lot that can be unpacked as far as what the film’s messages are. Many people with more space and more viewing experiences have said it better. It may something to save for another day. As far as the film itself goes, it is an incredibly engaging piece of art. There is a family survival story at its heart, but one that feels a lot heavier than most young people can really tackle. These characters are forced into maturity, though they avoid real discussion of what has pushed them to this point.

Utterly delighted with how that turned out. First part of this project that has been "all my own work" rather than rebuilding someone else's efforts. Grinning all over my face tonight. #lbscbritannia #lbsc #modelengineering #livesteam #steamrailway #brstandardclass7

Movies 2018 - 230. Girlhood (2014; written and directed by Céline Sciamma)

A girl seeking a happier life befriends three tougher, free-spirited girls. There are fewer things more frustrating in being such a huge movie fan than watching a great movie lose its way as it nears its ending. You find yourself completely engrossed by characters and storyline, only to watch the movie almost fall apart in its last act. Girlhood plays like a boiling pot for nearly one-hundred minutes. The plight of Marieme, our protagonist, is something we as an audience are super-connected to. Under the surface, there is this explosive soul wanting to burst out of the life she is forced to endure. Her brother is abusive. She can advance no further in school. Her family is supported by a mother working a job that pays next to nothing. Marieme’s first act of escape is by finding this group of tough friends who somehow accept her and care about her more than anyone else in her life — aside from her younger sister — ever has. Her second act of escape is through vengeful retribution against a girl who beat up one of her new friends. We watch Marieme evolve, growing stronger from moment to moment though she struggles finding direction. When she lashes out against her younger sister, things start to go awry. Because she corrects herself, seeing the effects of her brother’s abuse, the film still works. It is a powerful vision of a young women growing through traumatic experiences, even if she is far better than she is allowing herself to be. However, her third act of escape takes the film in a direction that doesn’t quite work, becoming a drug dealer who takes on a masculine appearance. With how her character has been up to this point, everything that follows feels false and the audience becomes disconnected. Her motivations are unclear and her choices seem to go against everything she has previously stood for. Perhaps there is some deeper meaning here about how far a person can fall or the impact a lack of a strong family can have on a person. If that’s the case, it isn’t presented with a great deal of clarity.

Doesn't look like much, but handles, hinges, and seating has been test fitted, now for a clean, and sort some couplings for the chassis.
