Jay-Z, photographed receiving a visit from then-girlfriend Beyoncé on the set of the music video for Kingdom Come's second single Lost One," filmed in New York City on November 10, 2006.
The second verse of the track addressed Hov's feelings on having to step away from a relationship because of his partner's need to achieve their full potential. There were many theories as to who he was speaking on, with most suggesting it was about his blossoming relationship with Beyoncé ("I don't think it's meant to be, B"). However, since going public with their relationship in late-2002 they had been photographed together regularly; and Hov had made sure to make time to support her work and accompany her on tour—beginning with 2003's "Dangerously in Love Tour." But, as with any details of their deliberately private relationship, a break could have been conducted quietly in those four years.
Upon release there were also rumors that the verse was partly inspired by his ex-girlfriend Rosario Dawson. They dated from 1997 to 2000, and she was aged between 17-20 during their relationship. Her acting career began to take off during that period, with roles in six big-budget films taking her all around the world. After three years of low-key dating a possible miscarriage (perhaps the child he had first revealed on "4 Da Fam") occurred towards the end of their relationship.
In Decoded Jay broke down the "Lost One" lyrics, and managed to explain the verse without dropping too many clues as to exactly who it focused on. This is a hallmark of Hov's music—he speaks on issues without explicit details so the experiences remain universally recognizable. Here is the section from Decoded: "These lines are about trying to have a real, serious relationship with another ambitious professional. In a lot of ways, this is the flip side of the songs in my catalog like 'Big Pimpin',' where women exist almost completely as predators or objects. This is about how difficult it is to respect a lover as an autonomous human being, with separate needs and goals and timelines than yours. It's one of the hardest things about a real relationship of equals. But it's worth it." #jayz #beyonce #KingdomCome
