For some Christians, every problem–and every solution–is spiritual. When it comes to ones Suffering Clinical Depression, well meaning individuals may offer advice like” Pray more, spend more time in bible study/meditation, pioneer, or to more thoughtless remarks as” you must be doing something wrong.” While there nothing is wrong with more prayer or more faith–based works- treating clinical mental illness should be seen as a separate issue. .
What happens in a congregation, when comments like “just have faith and pray more” doesn’t work, the mentally ill then are shamed and alienated even further. They’re convinced by their friends that their ailments must have a spiritual solution– so there always directed to do more works. Go out in Service, is a typical suggestion.
Note what Jesus said, at matt 11: 28: “Come to me,all you who are toiling and loaded down....,My yoke is kind and load is light” Mt 11:30. Jesus does not demand or recommend that we work just a little harder. .
Youll find it repeatedly stressed by professionals they should certainly seek the advice of “a trained mental health professional who has experience in this area.” .
Interesting article (Hope for sufferers 2004 Awake Mag. ) says-
The Bible admonishes all Christians to “speak consolingly to the depressed souls” and to “be long-suffering toward all.” (1 Thess 5:14) How can you do this? First, it is important to understand the distinction between mental and spiritual illness. For example, the Bible writer James indicated that prayer can make the spiritually indisposed one well. (James 5:14, 15) Nevertheless, Jesus acknowledged that those who are physically ailing need a physician. (Matt 9:12) Of course, it is always right and helpful to pray to Jehovah about any concern, including our health. (Psalm 55:22; Phil 4:6, 7) But the Bible does not state that increased spiritual activity in itself will cure present medical problems.
