After 9 and half years teaching my Tuesday charity donation yoga class, two weeks ago I had to make the hard decision to drop it.
Main reasons, the massage therapy course studies and the temporary move to Paddington.
There is something magical about offering something for free, in an informal but productive atmosphere, witnessing the strong commitment of a few people and their improvement in their practice. Some of the students in these pictures came to my class from day one.
I have to say that when I started teaching this class back in January 2009, I agreed with the manager of the community centre that my free basic class would become a £2 donation to the community centre that at that point was not receiving private funding anymore due to the financial crisis.
At that time I had about 25 people coming to class and the community centre had not many classes on the schedule. They were doing a lot of marketing in Camden journal and that was working.
Then suddenly after introducing other paid classes my class became very quiet.
Don't get me wrong, I love teaching small classes but it is a bit disappointing when you would like to offer something and realise that only a few people can get advantages from it.
From my side I should have probably advertised this class much more, I take my responsibility, but I thought that the community centre would have loved taking money from me and giving a free service.
Apparently they explained to me that the funding is used differently now, more events created outside and less work from the inside.
A marketing guy even told me once " if you offer something for free, people don't respond to it as they think it is bad quality"...I get the point but I find it really sad !!! :
I have tried ( not very hard though) to offer my time for NHS, but they told me it is not easy as the burocracy and rules are in the way.
Thank you so much to the students that came to this class all these years!! 🤗
It might return after the summer on a monthly basis in the community centre or in another venue, I will keep you updated!! I might try to find another way to do some charity work, if you have any ideas, please let me know!!! #charity
