Pics from our Senior Springtime Social, held at Smithton Church Hall yesterday. Around Christmas-time I'd been doing a few stories about the elderly and social isolation. Martin Mackay, aka Gramophone DJ got in touch and suggested we put on a Tea Dance. So we hired the hall, roped in fab singers Alison Gilbert, Emma Mitchell and accordionist Frankie Fraser and approached our local Tesco Community team for support in the form of tea & cakes - which their staff made at home themselves! Local groups Contact The Elderly and The Dunbar Centre agreed to come along to tell folk about social clubs.
It was a free event for people to attend and stupidly I hadn't allocated tickets. We didn't know if two, 20 or 200 people would come. Nerve-wracking, slightly! We were delighted then when almost every seat was filled, with around 60 people attending. One lady hadn't been out since Christmas. Others met folk they'd not seen in 20 years. It was a great, feel-good day, and we are going to hopefully turn it into a seasonal event.
