The highly acclaimed film I Am Not Your Negro will be screened in Lincoln at 6:30pm, Tuesday, Jan. 16 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Union Auditorium, 1400 R Street. An Oscar nominee for best documentary, the film examines race in America and is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. The FREE event is presented by NET, Nebraska’s PBS & NPR Stations, in partnership with University of Nebraska-Lincoln. An informal discussion will follow the screening and be moderated by Dr. Patrick Jones, professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of History and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Institute for Ethnic Studies. The film screening is part of @unlincoln MLK Week, celebrating the life of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The story begins in 1979 when James Baldwin writes a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, which was to be a personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of Baldwin’s close friends – Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, only 30 pages of his manuscript were completed. The film envisions the book Baldwin never finished and includes rich archival material.

MLK’s legacy couldn’t be more valuable to our global discourse than it is today. This MLK Day, recall a man (and hero of mine) greatly influenced by King’s work: James Baldwin. Please watch ‘I Am Not Your Negro’ on PBS tonight.
