Day 2 of #21daysinmyartworld - 'lesson learned'. The most significant lesson I've learned about making art is to HONOUR THE CYCLES! Nnu doing so is the cause of more artist problems than almost anything else I've seen. Until I really understood it, it caused me a lot of angst too. Very few, if any, artists make art all the time. Apart from the fact that as humans we have our own cycles, as does the planet we live on, creativity has its own cycles too. If we try to push on through or berate ourselves for being lazy, procrastinating, not being a 'real' artist etc, we just intensify and prolong the pain of not creating. .
If we allow the cycles to follow their natural rhythm, the difference between procrastination and a creative quiet period becomes obvious. I've found a huge piece of being an artist is self kindness and patience. I'm not saying I always manage them, but we do have to stop this relentless self criticism. Art is one of the most joyful means we have of expressing ourselves; honouring and accepting the cycles - however inconvenient! - is one of the quickest routes to accessing that joy. <3
The other thing I've learned is that there's no way I'll be able to comment on every post without giving us eating, sleeping, and working for the next 21 days! Will do my best and please know I'm beyond delighted at the enthusiasm with which those of you joining the challenge have kicked things off. :) Onward!
