Someone curiously asked me “When did you know you wanted to become a videographer?” My answer: I never “knew.” I just started listening to myself. And I did so at a point in my life where I had no other choice than to allow myself to evolve for the sake of survival.
.
Photography was my foundation. When I was 9 years old my dad gifted me my first camera––a palm-sized Canon Elph point & shoot with three options for print sizes (shout out to the panorama!) and a slick retractable flash that seemed like the dawning of a new age in consumer technology for my naiive little brain.
.
The comfort I found in composing and capturing would persist for decades to come. But even more powerful than my impulse to grab my camera was my tragic resistance to my own creativity.
.
It was “just a hobby.” The tens of thousands of shots, the eventual shift into making short videos for my friends and family to memorialize big moments and fun adventures, the journal I created in college solely for storyboarding scenes I dreamt up in my head, the all-consuming rapture I’d experience in letting my visual imagination take the lead every time I closed my eyes while listening to my favorite music. These were glimmering tokens of the magic that set me free. These were also the SIGNALS I neglected for decades.
.
I was too stupid, too talentless, too privileged, too undeserving, too irresponsible, too directionless, too far down my career path, too inexperienced, too intimidated, too introverted, too late in the game, too E V E R Y T H I N G to listen to the beck and call of my own joy.
.
But the time finally came, when the universe would grab me by the hair and shove my face in the mirror––forcing me to confront the ways in which I was complicit in preventing my own happiness. It was (and still is) a nasty and life-giving experience in feeling compassionate for my soul, following my intuition, and never looking back.
.
Don’t become. Just go within.

“This fog...” she said, as she passed me on the dock.
“I know,” I replied.
And I did know exactly what the stranger at the lake meant this morning.
