Whang-od, b. Feb. 17, 1917, is the last mambabatok (traditional Kalinga tattooist) and the oldest tattoo artist in the Philippines.
Her ink is composed of a water charcoal mixture that is tapped into the skin through a thorn end of a calamansi or pomelo tree. This ancient technique called batik dates back thousands of years and is relatively painful compared to modern techniques. According to tradition, her skills can only be passed down through lineage.
Whang-od spent more than 80 years tattooing headhunters and indigenous women of Buscalan Kalinga, but the warriors who used to earn tattoos no longer exist. Instead she now applies traditional art form to tourists visiting Buscalan.
