Ghoulies, 1984

Tagline: They'll Get You In The End!

Directed by: Luca Bercovici
Starring: Peter Liapis, Lisa Pelikan, Michael Des Barres, Jack Nance, Mariska Hargitay.

Synopsis: A young man and his girlfriend move into an old mansion home, where he becomes possessed by a desire to control ancient demons.

Fact: The original concept for the film was much different that the final product. Originally, the film was going to be about a kid moving into his grandfather's house who finds out that the inspirations for his grandfather's stories are living in the house and trying to kill him. Fox greenlighted the film for a $12 million budget but along the way, the film was dropped and the script was heavily rewritten to appeal to teenagers.

I should be honest here and admit that I'm an unapologetic @robzombieofficial fan. So I was excited to watch "31" tonight even though we've seen it at least a couple of times. Plus, I am thrilled to own the steelbook version, even if it's German. The collector cards are a nice touch! That all being said, I'll try to be fair, here.

The story is very basic: a group of carnival workers are travelling in an RV on Halloween in 1976, and are abducted on a roadside and forced to participate in a murderous and macabre game called "31" where they must survive 12 hours to earn their freedom.

The acting is good but Richard Brake absolutely steals the show in his 20 or so minutes on screen. He is positively diabolical and a joy to witness - a villain you hate to love. I could have done with less shaky-cam and would have preferred fewer quick-cuts. The other villains were all entertaining and some of the interior shots were beautiful.
While this may not be my favourite Zombie movie, I am always entertained by it and love the cartoonish baddies and the nods to the past. Speaking of which, the music is superb, as always, and he always uses a cast of actors that I'm thrilled to see on screen, so count me as a big fan! I can't wait for #3FromHell
