Like most of the homeless people I've met, François was sitting on a sidewalk and politely saying hello to all the people who walked past him. The first thing he told me when I approached him was that he didn't understand why no one greeted him in return. It doesn't cost anything though, a little "hello", a little smile, a little look. Just as a mean to say "I know you exist; I see you're here." Yet it's worth so much to a man who's regularly reminded that he's worth nothing to society.
