People I Admire - 9/23/18
I didn’t actually become aware of this amazing woman until last year when I saw the movie “Hidden Figures”. I was blown away and so moved by her story. What an inspiration! If I had learned about her 30 years ago, I may have chosen a different career. .
Growing up I desired to work for NASA, but I wanted to be an astronaut. As a woman wearing glasses, that chance was slim to none, so I went into graphic design.
If I was exposed to Katherine Johnson’s story sooner, I wonder if I would have looked into other paths and been even more inspired to be the strong woman I KNEW I was. .
Her story truly fascinates me.
I am blessed to have grown up in a world, time, place, where though I was aware of racism, I was never truly exposed to it. I had strong personalities around me that treated everyone equally. The people who molded me helped me to identify the racist comments and attitudes by others as “wrong”. .
I do see this as a blessing, but it also has a downside: I didn’t truly know what real challenges others (who don’t look like me) faced on a daily basis.
I walked out of Hidden Figures inspired AND shocked. How could our world have been like that? How is it possible there are STILL places like that?
The fact that Katherine Johnson, and many women like her, were able to make a place for themselves in a White Man’s world during that time—I want to grow up to be her! She is a true idol. Someone to look up to and admire.
