Just like bridges have arch's to help balance and distribute weight, so does our body. Think of the natural curves in a healthy spine - the cervical, upper thoracic, and lumbar, even the arches in your feet - they all serve to balance and transfer the weight of our body.

This is why yoga therapeutics is a hot topic these days. We want to strengthen while being mindful to not compromise our structure in yoga, but also in everyday life - ladies, this means laying off the heels as it's terrible for our back & spine!

Using props (straps & blocks) in your practice can help you train the muscles and bring your body back in to alignment. For example, in bridge pose but also crescent moon (shown here) it's important to make sure the muscles of the legs are fired on. Squeezing a block between your thighs can train your brain and body on what that feels like so you can eventually do it yourself without! Also, feet hip distance apart in this pose protects the low back. #bekindtoyourbody

Having had an injury to my spine that had me flat on my back for 2 months ( I couldn't sit, stand, walk without excruciating pain) I came to understand and appreciate just how important a healthy spine is.
Backbends not only improve our health and sense of wellbeing, it also builds a strong core. Backbends teach us so much about ourselves if we are willing to get uncomfortable, if we are willing to find stillness within the discomfort, truly look and allow ourselves to experience our experience.
