“What, you wanna battle me?” Hey everyone it’s Seth aka @souliisole with another @ogsupportgroup Throwback Thursday. Today, we take a slightly different approach and discuss not a sneaker but rather an important and memorable player in sneaker social media history, a long-lost and often forgotten sneaker platform which at the time turned heads and had a following back in the early days of niche social networking: Sneakerplay. Founded in 2006 by Robleh Jama, Mohamed Hashi & Rob Chia, the purpose of Sneakerplay was to establish a real-time connection where members could display, post, comment and battle each other based on their kicks displayed or worn in their uploaded pictures. I joined the platform in October 2006 after the site finished beta testing and used the same handle seen here. Initially, members joined the platform by invitation only which created a certain hype, allure, and mystique. In time, members earned invites which they could then use to invite their friends, slowly and steadily growing the brand. Each members’ profile displayed their username, photo, win/loss record, and overall win %. Members could invite each other to a sneaker battle pending approval on the part of the recipient, and send private messages as well. Like the IG platform today, members commented on each other’s posts allowing for a sense of engagement, interaction and community. Myriad friendly battles took place with Jermaine aka @phase2, Bijan @doctorswoosh (bameri), Puneet aka @solesupreme23, Bee aka @bee.knowbles (BKNOWBLES), Angela aka @ellaesco, snugglemcduggal, Christina aka @cbb.chen (cbbplanet), Alex aka @retrokid45, and others, which resulted in a some wins, more heartbreaking losses, and most importantly, good friendships and strong camaraderie as well. As Mr. Jones from Friday so eloquently stated: “You win some, you lose some. But you live. You live to fight another day.” A truism in both the sneaker realm and in the game of life as well. Sneakerplay shut down circa 2010 but remains a distant yet fond memory to those who participated. Comment below if you had a Sneakerplay account, your username, and your favorite memory from back in the day. Sneakerplay. All day.
