THIS DAY IN SKATEBOARDING HISTORY :::
Exactly 30 years ago today, on this 17th day of August, 1987, Mark Gonzales (AKA The Gonz AKA The Fucking King) broke his collarbone skating away from the cops on the concourse and out onto the tarmac of the Fresno air terminal. Please enjoy a few choice excerpts from the article that appeared in The Fresno Bee, 8/20/87. I think the pic was taken out at Hillary's place.
A professional skateboarder showed what he could do when he led security guards on a wild chase through the Fresno Air Terminal Monday, reportedly at speeds of up to 25 miles an hour, all in a search for his luggage. Mark Anthony Gonzales, 20, never found his bag but he did end up with a citation for trespassing and a broken collar-bone. The injury, which puts Gonzales out of skateboard action for about a month, didn’t come during a “McTwist” or some other fancy move. Gonzales was attempting to tie his shoe while moving and he hit a pole. In the lingo of skateboarders, he “slammed.”
Fresno police said that Gonzales skateboarded into the terminal Monday evening, tapped down the steps to the passenger concourse, rolled past the baggage security X-ray checkpoint, out a door that triggered an alarm and onto the aircraft loading ramp where he ran aboard a Pacific Southwest Airliner while surprised airline employees watched. It was the first ever skateboard roll through Fresno Air Terminal, Couch said. Officers had Gonzales in custody within six to 10 minutes after the initial alarm.
“I just went to get my bag,” Gonzales said in an interview. “I had lost a bag. I thought I’d left it on the plane.” He didn’t stop at the security checkpoint, he contended, because: “I thought the lady was telling me to get off my skateboard.”
