GLUTES⁣ 🍑
With over 600 muscles in the human body 💪 the gluteus maximus is the largest muscle of them all! It has to be large and powerful because it has the responsibility of keeping our body erect and standing tall. ⬆️The job of the gluteus maximus is the extend AND externally rotate the leg, therefore is there is weakness in the glutes, it can result in internal rotation of the hip during daily task which usually causes the knee to cave in (valgus). Several injuries have been linked to weakness in the glutes such as patellofemoral pain syndrome, iliotibial band friction, anterior cruciate ligament sprains, and chronic ankle instability. 💥⁣

🔹One study by Distefano et al. looked at 12 common exercises used in rehab that BEST activate the gluteus maximus and here are the results listed in order from the highest glute max activity based off EMG studies. ⁣
1. Single limb squat*⁣
2. Single limb deadlift* ⁣
3. Transverse lunge*⁣
4. Forward lunge ⁣
5. Sideways lunge ⁣
6. Side-lying hip abduction ⁣
7. Sideways hop ⁣
8. Clam with 60º hip flexion ⁣
9. Transverse hop ⁣
10. Forward hop ⁣
11. Clam with 30º hip flexion ⁣
12. Lateral band walk ⁣

🔹Literature has stated that muscle activation greater than 50% to 60% MVIC is conducive for muscle strength gains. The first three exercise have at least 50% MVIC. The single limb squat and deadlift also effectively targeted the gluteus medius which is a smaller glute muscle that stabilizes the pelvis. This study found the best exercise for the gluteus medius was side-lying hip abduction. ⁣

Adding in some mobility work this morning with the @hyperice HyperSphere. Especially after playing basketball yesterday morning, my hips, calves and lower back need some extra love to loosen up and get back to full range of motion. Here I am squatting and stepping my foot to the side. This burns your standing leg and highly activates that gluteus medius on the other leg. Activated glutes and core make me feel alive and happening. •



I’d also like to take a moment to say that I just saw California for the first time recently. I loved it and found it poppin. It is sad to think that a city and state known for dreams coming true and new innovations coming out is prone to such disaster due to climate change. It is so hard to help climate change because how we get to work, go interesting places, and get our almonds, avocados, kale, and salmon all come from heavily fueled transportation.
