When you pack your schedule with all.the.tasks and spend all your energy on work and ignore your body's need for rest and space, you are sending the message to your whole system: "Hey self? I don't really care about what you actually need." OOF.

This is why burnout really freakin' kills us. Because we are constantly sending the message to our system that is trying really hard to get us to do the right thing that we don't give a shit about it.

No wonder the burnout cycle has us feeling the way it does!

It's so important to take action on what's important to us. And take the stuff off our plate that is not important to us.

Society will tell you that IT'S ALL IMPORTANT AND URGENT!! It's not. That's bullshit.

Does feeling better matter to you? Is it a priority on your list?

Time to take a little action on that. Take something off your plate that doesn't matter. Put something there that makes you feel better about yourself. Better about your own humanity.

Do a little more of that. Everyday.

Feelings are like playing hot potato. No one wants them. So we shove them deep into ourselves or we shove them onto someone else.
This is the beginning of burnout culture.
Shove the feeling down. Soldier through. Pretend things don't bother you. Pretend "you can handle it." Then, when your system is completely depleted and overloaded, snap at your co-workers. Yell at your spouse. Be pissed at the world.

Fuck burnout culture.Your body and your system is gonna shut down and the people around you are gonna keep throwing more shit on your plate until you tell them NO MORE.

Your feelings are trying to tell you something. And it's not that you're not strong enough. It's that you've got big stuff to do in this world. And you are gonna have to do it on YOUR terms.

Let those feelings rip. Have 'em. Write about them. Talk about them. Scream about them into a pillow. Dance about them. Breathe about them. Feelings LOVE movement.

There is a season for sun and tank tops.

There is a season for winter jackets and scarves.

And these seasons cycle.

Warmth will return, even when you can't feel it right now.

We're like that. There will be seasons that you cannot get grounded. That you are fighting insomnia. That you hate your job. That you hate your co-workers. That you feel like shit no matter how many people tell you how amazing you are.

When you are there, it feels unmovable and permanent.

But I promise, this is a season. And it is going to end.

The cool thing about human seasons is that you can move them along a bit through contact. Human contact and support.

Nurse logs are fallen trees which, as they decay, become a nourishing base for new seedlings to grow. Our shadows, our bad habits, the things in ourself that we are trying to dismantle and make obsolete do not disappear from our systems.

They become like this nurse log - a place of nourishment, a thing to help us feed our new actions and beliefs and remind us what we are working toward.

Our burnout nourishes us toward better health. The times we didn't come to someone's aid nourishes us to act next time. The pit in our stomach for not speaking our truth nourishes us to find our words. Don't reject the things within you that are not "good." Do not reject any part of yourself. Some of those parts were put there by other people. Some of those parts are misguided. Some of those parts are outdated.

Some of those things are hard to look at. But they can be used for nourishment and for fuel.
Use them to grow a version of you that is stronger, more in alignment, and better suited to a kind, compassionate, and vibrant life.

When trying to fix burnout, people usually skip steps 1 and 2 and go right to step 3.

They take a sick day.

They quit their job.

They stop drinking coffee.

They start taking yoga.

And these things will help. But only for a little bit.

If you don't get to the core of WHY you are feeling burned out, if you don't at first NOTICE what is happening inside of you and outside of you and pay attention to how it makes you FEEL, then you are missing all of the breadcrumbs that lead to your answers.

Notice the dynamics inside of you. Notice the dynamics between yourself and your coworkers and your boss. Notice the amount of free time versus busy time. Notice your energy level during the day. Notice your amount of stillness versus movement. Then feel how it effects you.This is where change starts. First by making no change at all. Life requires different modes for different seasons for different times. It requires us to be agile, aware, and present.

There are times where you may just sit in prayer and contemplation. You may spend time researching candidates and ballot initiatives. You may spend time noticing and becoming self aware. You may form opinions and ideas. You may rest and gather your strength.

But to end things there would be incomplete.

Use your prayers as the beacon to act. Use your research to back your confidence and your vote at the polls. Use your rest to fuel hours of work you believe in. Use your knowledge as a foundation for your action.

Pray and act.

This ebb and flow is healthy and necessary. One can't be effective without the other.
Prayer without action is unmoving. Action without prayer is reckless.

Sit in stillness and move your body.
Research candidates and ballot initiatives and vote.
Understand what you want from a job/partner/life and take action to honor that.

Both. And.

Sweetpea is camera shy but I'm not.

Don't take your negative thoughts too personally. They're not really yours anyway. Somebody told you something that gave you the impression that you weren't pretty enough or strong enough or smart enough. And it stuck.
Every once in a while those thoughts will fly through in the background especially if you are feeling under resourced or sad or are going through a hard time. But don't let those thoughts become you.
Take some time to deal with the feeling. Breathe. Move Your Body. Meditate. Laugh. Do the things that move the energy that is feelings. The thoughts are just information. And sometimes that information is just bullshit.

Get out of your head and into your body. See? There you are.

Change is uncomfortable, blah blah blah, we all know this.

But the practices and methodologies and skills that you use to create change should not only work but also be inherently enjoyable.

I use things like breathing and awareness and movement and connecting with their awesomeness to help people recover from, and prevent burnout.

All of these things, while they can feel a little awkward in the beginning actually feel great to do.

Whatever you do to heal, whatever you do to recover, pick something your body takes in and says, "YES, PLEASE, MORE!" Because burnout comes from ignoring that our incredible systems have needs and things that it requires.

Just a gentle reminder... Burnout is an indicator that other people's needs and demands are getting priority over your own.

It's normal. Not many of us have been taught how to take care of ourselves. I mean, truly take care of ourselves.
As a client asked today, "do some people just know this stuff or are we all learning as adults?!" I've never met a person that hasn't had to untangle conditioning or norms to discover themselves. As far as I know we are all still learning. I know I am.

Stay warm today. And if you want to invite people under a blanket with you, cool. But don't you dare give them the whole thing.

Throwback to when shorts and a tshirt were appropriate apparel.
Now I'm not comfortable unless I've got my winter jacket and a scarf and a hat on!

In order to be comfortable we have to listen to the signs our body is always communicating to us. Feeling the cold is easy. But can you feel other things? Can you feel when you are hungry? Can you feel when you are sad? Can you feel when somebody has trampled over your boundaries? Can you feel when you are joyous? Can you feel when you need comfort?

If you can't feel it then you can't address it or have choice around it.

In order to live a life where we feel safe and content we need to be able to tune into the signs of our body. And most of us can't because we have been trained out of it!

Turtleneck sweaters ftw because I can almost crawl inside of them and hide.

The last few days I noticed my energy is softer, less accessible, a bit more elusive. The changing weather, full moon, and my period have all contributed to this drop in energy.
And it's that straightforward.
When I notice these things about myself, it allows me to have some compassion for my slightly slower pace and my slightly slower brain. I know I won't be quite as sharp and discerning and I know it may cause some frustration for other people.

It's that straightforward.
It's still challenging for me to be organized enough to plan for these drops or at least have some systems in place for them. I'm not perfect, I'm still learning, and I'm open to the fact that I have plenty of room to grow.
I still show up for my clients. I still do the work I am here to do. And that work may take a slightly different form during these time periods.

The Hunter's moon is on its way.

I love this time of year. When I get out of my car, I can smell the leaves immediately. It reminds me of apple picking, hunter pacing and hay from my riding days.

There is something different about the air and the feeling of being outside. The chill is decisive and unapologetic. The colors are bold and declarative.
Fall is an open display of beauty with no concern for our creature comfort. It asks us to ready ourselves. It asks if we have prepared.
More sweaters. More tea. More books. More writing. Bundle up to go outside. Bundle up to be inside. You can't approach fall with a casual attitude. Fall knows who it is and shows up fully whether you are ready or not.
