Cod liver oil. 🐟🐟🐟🐟Do you take it? My preferred brand is @nordicnaturals! I prefer the liquid form of cod liver oil because it absorbs and metabolizes in my body best in liquid form. (I also take my B-12 and Vitamin D3 in a sublingual liquid form for this same reason as well!) This one also comes in an orange flavor, so it doesn’t have that overly “fishy” taste at all! High in Omega-3 fatty acids including both DHA and EPA along Vitamin D (which many people with RA tend to be deficient in!) and Vitamin A, there are few reasons why you SHOULD’T be taking it (unless you just can not tolerate oils in your diet...you know yourself best!). It’s derived from the liver of the fish, making it much healthier than the cheap grocery store/generic fish oil tablets you can find anywhere and don’t know what you are actually getting. 😝 This makes it pricier, but investing in a quality cod liver oil is well worth it in my opinion! I get this one at my local health food store. For me, I always take this with my digestive enzymes (since I have no gallbladder...see my recent post for that story!) and I take it just straight or I put it into my green smoothies! I notice a significant difference in the pain and inflammation from my RA when I forget to take my cod liver oil! It’s a vital staple in my supplement stack! Happy Thursday! 💛🐟#the_rheumatoidarthritismama
The fatty acids found in fish oil are believed to relieve inflammation and accelerate the healing process. Fish oil is used to treat exercise-related muscle soreness, nerve damage caused by accident or injury, and age-related muscle inflammation.
NOT ALL FOODS ARE CREATED EQUAL🚫🙅🏽♀️ • Happy Saturday y’all! Today I wanted to start something new on my IG titled #FoodScienceSaturday . The whole reason I started this IG was to use my knowledge as a dietetic student to debunk common misconceptions about food and nutrition. So today, I am taking time to spread a little #foodknowledge . The first topic: readily absorbed foods. 🐟🐟🐟🐟 You may have heard of omega-3 fatty acids and their crucial role in brain and heart health. You also may have heard of their food sources, such as fish, vegetable oils, walnuts, and flax seeds. What you may not have heard of is how crucial it is to ensure you’re ingesting all forms of this fatty acid. There are three main forms of omega-3s: Docoahexaenoic acid (DHA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and Alpha- Linolenic Acid (ALA). The main difference among these (other than the length of the chains) is how our body uses them. Studies have concluded that EPA and DHA are used much more efficiently than ALA by our bodies. This is because ALA must go through a conversion in our body to create EPA and eventually DHA. 🐟🐟🐟🐟 The ONLY concentrated source of DHA and EPA is fish and seafood. Sources such as chia seeds, nuts, flaxseeds, etc. will primarily be ALA. Consuming DHA & EPA will not require the conversion (although, EPA can be converted to DHA, but will still be converted faster than ALA) and will allow for more readily absorption. So what does this mean? Next time you hear “(insert plant food here) is full of omega-3s!” Realize it’s going to be full of ALAs! Not DHA or EPA. So, EAT YOUR FISH to increase your brain & heart health 😊🧠 Sidenote: these foods with ALA are NOT “bad” (hence my jar full of chia seeds in my picture), it is just super important to consume DHA & EPA in their full forms as well! 😁 • • • #brainhealth#hearthealth#RD2be#RDtobe#eatyourfish#EPAandDHA#health#healthy#fitness#science#foodforthought#honesthealthlife#dietetics#dieteticstudent
