Multi award winning @nickspeedent will be a featured guest at MECCAcon 2017 #MECCAcon2017 weekend for our #hipHop panels!
THURSDAY, Sept 14, Submerge/ #UNDERGROUNDRESISTANCE!! The son of a music television producer, Nick Speed lived a childhood steeped in music. Being exposed to his father’s work with legendary R&B producer Quincy Jones, mentored by #DJHouseShoes and introduced to rap artists like #Elzhi of #SlumVillage and #OneBeLo of Binary Star – Detroit’s Nick Speed began thumping on the MPC and working with everyone from Phat Kat to #Proof, Stacy Epps to #DannyBrown and @mbthelight. His demo soon fell into the hands of G-Unit President Sha Money XL, who offered him an in-house production contract and management deal, and Speed used his love of Motown soul and Detroit hip-hop beats to contribute to the signature sound of G-Unit’s platinum-disc dominance of early-mid ‘00s US rap, working with artists like #50Cent, #TalibKweli and Lloyd Banks. For Speed, though, it always comes back to Detroit.
Nick Speed won Best Hip Hop Artist For 2013 at The Detroit Black Music Awards, and has released four studio albums – 2007's self-released D-Tour, 2013’s The Beat Down, on Moodymann’s Mahogani Music, 2016’s self-released Nick of Time, and 2017's D-Cyphered which he self-released – and arranged and produced for the 2012 posthumous J Dilla album, The Rebirth of Detroit, on Ruff Draft Records. Speed scored the 2017 Detroit Free Press movie '12th And Clairmount' which was a unique documentary about the 1967 Detroit Riots-his third movie score for the newspaper.
Speed was among the first ever hip-hop artists to appear on the walls of The Detroit Institute Of Arts in their exhibit 'Detroit After Dark'. That exhibit opened the door for the 2017 exhibit 'D-Cyphered: featuring Eminem, Big Sean, Danny Brown, Kid Rock, Dej Loaf and 243 of Detroit Hip Hop's greatest contributors. Speed also released the 39-song original matching album'. All music panels are sponsored by Submerge and (UR). REGISTER TODAY!
