2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 9: Artistic: Still Life. "Your inspiration this week is Still Life. A couple of pieces of fruit on a table won't impress in the advanced challenge though... so really be creative." ☆

My husband is a woodworker, and I've always been fascinated with the long curly shavings he makes from his planes.  I took this photo with the purpose of the one tightly curled shaving being in focus (it reminded me of a rose bud). I love how the different grains can be seen in the different shavings. ☆

2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 8: Technical: One Shot. "Imagine that it is the last frame on a roll of film, and you have to nail it. For this challenge only take one shot. No deleting, no 2nd shot. The honor system is in play." ☆
This photo was a delight to take.  At first, I was nervous about only having one chance to get "the" photo.  But after I took a deep breath, and made sure of my shot and background, I took the photo and couldn't be happier with it.  I love the bokeh in the background, and the vibrancy and contrast of the orchid bloom.  I also love the side view of the other blossom, and the out-of-focus buds in the foreground. ☆

2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 7: Story: Forgotten. "Abandoned was a very popular week in the original challenge. For the advanced challenge tell the story of something forgotten." ☆

Ah, with children, there is always a toy or stuffed animal forgotten in the corner.  This little Christmas sock monkey is a favorite of my youngest daughter, and I happened across it one day while we were cleaning her room.  I liked how it looked like the sock monkey was waving at us, and trying to get our attention, "Hey guys!  I'm over here!" #dogwoodphotographychallenge #2016dogwoodphotochallenge #thekissingcrust #dogwoodweek7 #sockmonkey

2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 6: Artistic: Candy. "A throwback to one of the favorite weeks of the original challenge. Your artistic inspiration this week is candy. Since this is the advanced challenge... you can't actually use candy in the scene." A candy photograph without candy, hmmm.  I liked the contrast of the blue and the white/silver colors, but I felt like the words should have been in a bit better focus.

2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 5: Technical: Ten Shots. "Shoot 10 shots of the same subject. Each shot should be from a different angle, distance, and focal length. Share your favorite image from the set." Succulents.  My husband and I have both enjoyed cacti and succulents for years, and this planter was a gift I'd just given my husband.  I enjoyed taking the 10 shots of this planter, and this was my favorite.  I liked how the water droplets sparkled, and how the little red succulent was in my "rule of thirds" line.

2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 4 - Story: Mirror. "Tell a story using a mirror." •The circular shape and angled accents of this beautiful copper top are reflected in the mirror.  We purchased this top for our anniversary, and I like how the round shape of the top reminds me of our wedding rings.

3017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 3 - Artistic: Land. "Your inspiration this week is land. This could be a landscape, or an image inspired by the land in some way." This week 3 assistant came up just as the rhubarb was pushing up through the snow. This photo reminds me of the strength and resiliency of the land, from bitter cold to summer's muggy heat.  I liked the contrast of the colors.

2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 2 - Technical: SOOC. "Straight out of the Camera. No Photoshop. Shoot a compelling image and post it without edits. No cheating! (Be sure and save the image file for the end of the challenge!)." I was sure tempted to do some editing, at least just to clean up the photo some!  However I resisted the urge. 😊

2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 1 - Story: Rule of Thirds.  Assignment: "The rule of thirds is the first compositional rule most photographers learn; but most don't know why they learn it. The rule of thirds is amazing for telling a story. Tell a story using rule of thirds." This photograph shows a story about a plant's life: new buds, blooming flowers and spent flowers.  I tried to experiment using the rule of thirds with the stem.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 32: Landscape: Colorful. "Shoot a landscape that packs as much color as you can find into the scene." A lovely sunrise, with our pine trees silhouetted against the painted sky.
Ok, now I'm finally caught up with the current week 32 of the 2016 Challenge! Now, my next goal is to get caught up on posting the 2017 Dogwood Photography Challenge I've been doing simultaneously with the 2016 challenge. 📷

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 30: Artistic: Patterns. "Get inspired by the rhythm that patterns bring to your images." This is our African hand drum, and I have always been fascinated by the mix of patterns that was used to create it. I tried to get a dramatic shot that highlighted the beautiful carving pattern in the wood.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 29: Landscape: Waterscape. "Ocean, lake, river, pond, or puddle. Make water the primary subject of this landscape." A sunset cruise in one of my husband's handmade cedar strip double kayaks.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 27: Artistic: Blue.  Simply the scene to make your primary subject stand out." I absolutely love this shot.  A perfect blue sky, and the new leaves on our oak tree.  The long draping seed pods are called "catkins." I really like how the sun is shining through some of the new green leaves.

Week 26: Landscape: Simply.  Simply the scene to make your primary subject stand out." A late season tulip.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 25: Portrait: Silhouette. "Expose for the background and let your subject fall into shadow. Shape is important this week." Another difficult assignment for me.  I tried so many times to get a silhouette! This was my best effort: the hand planes on the shelf in my husband's shop.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 24: Artistic: Sparkle! "Shoot what inspires you this week, just make sure it sparkles." Mmmm, a bubbly, sparkly hard cider in one of my favorite little glasses.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 23: Landscape: Weather. "This week should be as unpredictable as the weather! Feature the weather in this week's landscape." The first thunderstorm of the year rolling in over the trees at our home back in May.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 22: Portrait: Hands. "Usually the face is the strongest element in the frame; with the hands being second. Make the hands the most important element in your image this week." My grandparents were married for 67 years when I took this photograph. I actually tried to get them to "hold hands" so I could get a great photograph. I wasn't happy with the result. You could tell it was forced and staged. But, I thanked them and went on my way *keeping an eye on them.* Sure enough, the next time I looked, their hands had settled into their regular, fingers curled together embrace. Yes! I finally got the picture I was looking for.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 21: Artistic: Fantasy.  Is this real life, or is this just fantasy... Your artistic inspiration this week is fantasy.

2016 Dogwood Photography Challenge Week 18: Artistic: Texture. "The artistic inspiration this week is texture. You should almost be able to feel the image." Buttery, juicy, just perfectly seared tuna with white and black sesame seeds.  Can you almost feel this image? Yum!
