This is one of the most frequent questions I get during walk-in appointments. These days there is a Rapid-Strep-Test that we can use in the office, but typically the diagnosis of #StrepThroat is made using the Centor criteria. You get 1 point for each of the following:
1️⃣ Swollen tonsils or pus on tonsils
2️⃣ Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
3️⃣ Fever > 100.4F (38C)
4️⃣ Patient does NOT have a cough
5️⃣ Age 3-14 years old
Usually we will treat with antibiotics if the patient has 3 or more points.
If you take a step back and think about it, bacterial infections typically effect one area (in this case the throat). Viral illnesses usually cause multiple symptoms (cough, runny nose, body aches, fatigue, sore throat). If you have these symptoms, you should see your doctor to help make the diagnosis and if necessary prescribe #antibiotics.
