My hosts are a family with seven children, and almost all of them were Division I volleyball players. The one “short” kid, I was told, played soccer in college. The youngest is still in high school and also is pursuing a college volleyball scholarship. They’re all at work and school, which means I’m working by myself in a kitchen designed for giants. They’ve requested I make a Vietnamese meal, which I am, but I should have thought through this. Vietnamese kitchens are mostly designed for people of “modest stature,” so some of the things I need are only accessible by stepladder or chair.
