Whenever I tell people I'm an underwater archaeologist, they always nervously ask, "Do you see sharks?! Aren't you scared??" I've seen plenty of sharks on dives and find these misunderstood creatures fascinating, so I thought I'd shed some positive light! 💙
Sharks rarely bother scuba-divers, or humans in general, at least not intentionally or frequently, as attacks usually happen due to them mistaking us for their prey. And more importantly, sharks play a vital role in balancing the marine ecosystem. As apex predators, many shark species keep other marine populations regulated. It's upsetting to see shark populations decreasing due to the damaging demand for shark fins increasing or them getting caught in trawl nets and longlines. The greatest threat to sharks, and our marine ecosystem, is often humans! Let's keep educating and pushing for positive change!
I'm a huge fan of @cristinazenato 's love of sharks and incredible work on shark education, check it out!
