#DeepwaterHorizonOilSpill

MOST RECENT

On April 20th, 2010 the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry started spewing crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. For five months, the oil would leak into the Gulf, causing extensive and long-term damage to marine and wildlife habitats.
.
Jo went down to the Gulf for two weeks to document the effects that the oil was having on wildlife. At that time, the oil was only beginning to wash up on shore. It was difficult getting access to shorelines and even waterways because of heavy media restrictions imposed by the perpetrators themselves, British Petroleum (BP). Fishermen and even US Coast Guard officials were asked not to bring media out to see the spill; a censorship tactic used to mislead the public into thinking that the spill was under control.
.
These photos are a document of those two weeks.

Not one of our usual pretty pictures of nature, this image represents how 37% of the Gulf of Mexico coastline was polluted by oil that washed ashore during 2010's Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Join us on Saturday, January 27, 2018 for a special lecture from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) on the latest news from long-term research studies of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Oil spill specialist Dr. Monica Wilson will be here to answer questions about how oil spills affect the Gulf of Mexico and Florida. During the #DeepwaterHorizonOilSpill almost 200 million gallons of oil was released into the Gulf of Mexico but where did all that oil go? Join us on Saturday, Sept. 9th for Oil Spill Science, a presentation from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI). Dr. Monica Wilson of GoMRI's outreach team will explain the path that the oil took and its impacts on the marine environment that are still being studied today. Register for a free ticket to this program at: https://oil-spill-science.eventbrite.com or use the Eventbrite main link in our profile.

This image was one I created after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. As my time with this image has evolved I have used it in reverence to the Goddess known in our history as Yemaya. I am a water carrier ... an Aquarius. This image is about the unconscious... the dreams... the deep underneath... it is offered in reverence to Water... as an element... as our mother...I offer this image to you in greeting card form to spread love... 100% proceeds of this item will always be donated to organizations that devote support to our water systems. #mermaid #subconscious #dream #flintmichigan #yemaya #water #goddess #deepwaterhorizonoilspill #Aquarius #watercarrier #arttherapy #collage #art #mother #collage #digitalcollage #photoshop #designer #mothersday #card #gicleeprint #greetingcard #ingridpetresart

deepwater horizon awesome film, a must see

THALASSIA, 2011, by the American artist Caledonia Curry, also known by her street tag Swoon @swoonhq, is currently installed inside the Woodward Avenue entrance to the Detroit Institute of Arts. "The large figure nearby is based on artist-activist Naima Penniman. She co-wrote a performance titled 'Hurricane Season,' a call to action in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In this work, artist Caledonia Curry transformed Penniman into the Greek sea goddess Thalassia. Adorned with a myriad of ocean creatures, Thalassia rises from the depths with tentacles of paper, plastic, and fabric streaming below her. Curry originally created this work for the New Orleans Museum of Art in response to the water-related catastrophes that have pummeled New Orleans over the past decade, including the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill that devastated Louisiana's coastal ecosystems and economy. This artwork is an invitation to consider how creative acts can help us process and transcend emotional and spiritual distress caused by disaster."

Damn! I just watched the Deepwater Horizon movie and I'm not okay 😭😵😭. I should've gone to the cinemas to watch it. The accident was so horrible and horrifying. I don't really know what to say, for those families who have lost their loved ones I am really sorry.

BTW this is the first movie that I've watched this 2017.

An abstract of our DEEPEND Barcoding project of Deep-Sea Crustaceans got accepted! We will be presenting our research! IM SO STOKED! For more info on the research I'm involved, look below:
🦀

The Gulf of Mexico is inhabited by a large and diverse group of crustaceans. As part of the DEEPEND consortium, we obtained DNA barcodes of deep-sea crustaceans to aid in identification efforts, adult-larval linkages, and new species discoveries. A genetic barcode is a unique section of DNA that can be used as a representative sequence for the corresponding species. Barcoding provides a standardized approach for species identification when traditional taxonomic methods are not possible, for instance due to cryptic species or damaged specimens. All barcodes are being deposited in open-source databases to serve as a genetic species inventory of deep-sea crustaceans. They will also be used in studies exploring adult-larval linkages, population connectivity, phylogenetics, and cryptic species complexes. This will ultimately contribute to a more accurate monitoring of the Gulf of Mexico’s biota and provide a baseline for future studies in this highly important body of water.

#Tesla has been selected to build the largest lithium-ion battery solution in the world near #LosAngeles. It will “hold enough energy to power more than 2,500 households for a day or charge 1,000 Tesla vehicles,” the company says.

The deal to build the facility comes after the recent methane gas leak in LA at the #AlisoCanyon natural gas facility, which was one of the biggest #environmentaldisasters in US history. The leak displaced 8,000 #California residents and caused more environmental damage than the #DeepwaterHorizonoilspill. The leak went on for months before it was eventually plugged.

One of the undocumented downsides is that now Los Angeles doesn’t have a power facility to fuel the city during peak demand, and it puts the #LosAngeles basin suddenly at risk of rolling blackouts as winter approaches. After the leak, California governor #JerryBrown declared a state of emergency and the California Public Utilities Commission quickly began the process of procuring a replacement energy solution.

Ultimately, Tesla was selected to build a 20 MW/80 MWh Powerpack system. The most amazing part about it is that Tesla says it will have the Powerpack ready and deployed in just three months, thanks to the company’s giant Gigafactory. The Powerpack won’t be in Los Angeles exactly, but at the Southern California Edison Mira Loma substation, about 40 miles away from Los Angeles. “The Gigafactory’s ability to produce at a large scale will allow this system to be manufactured, shipped, installed and commissioned in three months, Tesla sad in a statement. “The system will charge using electricity from the grid during off-peak hours and then deliver electricity during peak hours to help maintain the reliable operation of Southern California Edison’s electrical infrastructure which feeds more than 15 million residents. By doing so, the Tesla Powerpack system will reduce the need for electricity generated by natural gas and further the advancement of a resilient and modern grid.” ✋🏾More in comments👇🏾#Technocracy #SolarCity #AutonomousCity #SmartCity #SmartGrid
