I’d like to invite you to my recital, Kanthan Aadal, on Thursday, April 19. This recital will feature live accompaniment by Toronto based artists and commentary by Professor Sudharshan Duraiyappah. We are very excited to present this margam entirely based on Murugan.

About the recital:
We will be presenting a concise characterization of Thamil Kadavul (deity of the Thamil people), Murugan. According to Thamil literature dating back to the Sangam period (approx. 300 BCE-300 CE), Thamil land was divided into the following types: Marudam (agriculture), Neital (seashore), Mullai (forest/pasture), Palai (desert) and Kurinji(mountain/hill). The presiding deity over the Kurinji region was said to be Murugan. With references made to texts written by Arunagirinathar, Avvaiyar and a few other poets, through this recital we wish to show the different dimensions of Murugan and explore the resasoning as to why he is proclaimed to be a Thamil Kadavul.
