30 'til 30: Day 25

I turn 30 years old in less than 30 days. Inspired by last Tuesday's therapy appointment, I decided to dedicate these next 30 days to making a conscious effort to practice self-care. And, to promote the importance thereof, I am going to share a bit about it every day.

Today's self-care: Spent quality time with my husband.
.
Self-care includes doing things for myself, not doing things, and spending time with friends. But it also includes taking time to be with my husband. I work at least five days a week, and he is gone days at a time to work in Narva, and a lot of times even if we're both home, we're kind of doing our own thing. Or our 'quality time' is running into town for groceries. Or one or both of us is just exhausted.

Today, however, I set aside my other responsibilities until tomorrow. We slept in, spent time with our cats, walked over to his fraternity house, stopping on the way for an iced tea and a chocolate bar, and raked and played in the leaves. Now we're digesting dinner and are about to make popcorn and watch something on Netflix before going to bed early.

We've been together for six years and eight months tomorrow, and I both discover new and rediscover old things I love him for. As horribly cliché as it is, it really is important to take time to reconnect with your partner. For those with hectic schedules, don't worry — scheduled is no less quality than spontaneous quality time. In the meantime, don't forget the small gestures — I spare him from having to give Hansa meds twice a day and kiss him on the neck as he does the dishes while he changes the cat litter and puts the duvet covers on the blankets when we change the sheets. Your partner's gestures in caring for you can go a long way in helping you care for yourself too, which allows you in turn to better care for them as well.

Remember: oxygen mask on yourself first, then your loved ones around you. Practice self-care.

Depression is a weird thing because sometimes you have no idea what’s even wrong. And that’s the hard part. But I’m finding it easier if I’m honest with myself and honest with the people around me. Even if you don’t have a twin, a sibling, a good friend, or a good parent, you are still not alone. There are always people who are going through the same thing as you and even people who haven’t struggled with what you do who still care for you and are willing to talk to you. If you need help and need someone to talk to, reach out. Is there a friend or someone nice at school or work who you can ask if you can talk to them? Chances are if you ask them they will say yes, and if they don’t, you can ask a different person. You can also always reach out to the suicide hotline. If you don’t want to talk on the phone, there’s a number to text. Even if you aren’t suicidal, they are a good resource for just someone to talk to. You can also always DM me, and I will try my very best to help you and talk to you. Another thing that has really helped me is journaling. I don’t really keep a journal per say, but I do have a rant journal where if I need to talk I write it down to get it out.
Your feelings are valid and you deserve to reach out for help. It doesn’t make you weak, it makes you strong because you know what you need to do to help your mental health. If we keep things in, if we let them build up, it will make things worse and eventually it will come out in a huge way. You are not being annoying or burdening people by asking to talk to them. You are no weak for asking for more help. You deserve to be happy and let your emotions out💕 ~Natalie

i’ve struggled with anxiety, depression and suicidal ideations for as long as i can remember.
and i can sit here and put the blame on those who’ve hurt me but that doesn’t sit well with me because i’ve learned to forgive. i still struggle with the memories but i’m still healing and will continue to work on myself, for the betterment of my well-being. to rid myself of the parasite.

before i disappeared,
i found myself feeling like a ghost.
misguided.
a lonely soul walking amongst the living.
all i felt was pain.
and i wanted out.
but i was scared. scared of what i might do. scared of who i might hurt. scared of the unknown. but the desire to vanish was stronger.

i realized i hadn’t been taking care of myself. i lost a lot of weight. i wasn’t sleeping. i was overworked, stressed, and emotionally and physically tired.

i then contacted a therapist. she was a new light in my life. the one i have to thank for how far i’ve come. i wouldn’t have gotten the help i have today without her. she drove me to a clinic, where we checked me in to meet with a psychotherapist to be evaluated. i spent all day, 9am-5pm, with her and specialists. i told them everything i have gone through in my life. i told them very intimate details that only a few people know. they scheduled me immediately for dbt courses, submitted me into a trauma therapy group, took me out of work, and prescribed me medication. i was so emotional that day because i could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. change was on the horizon.
