Preparing for surgery and procedures. We all have our own practices but I thought I would share some of mine! I get asked about port surgery quite often. Some things that help me are prepare are meditation or hypnosis tapes to help manage my fear and anxiety. Surgery is one of my biggest fears actually, especially because I am a rare patient whose safety relies on being able to advocate for myself. One great option is ‘Guided Meditations to Promote Successful Surgery’ by Belleruth Naparsek.
On the day of surgery, using the Mastocytosis Society pre-medication protocol is important to make sure my mast cell disease doesn’t flare. I also make sure to let the surgeon know other complicating factors like slow healing and the tendency to burn through lidocaine faster with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. •
• I also surround myself with comforting items like my amazing zebra blanket from @aim4joie and my ear buds bumping @samsmithworld. Of course human support is very soothing too, like my sweet boyfriend’s presence. 💗 Re-fillable ice packs, bendy straws and my neck pillow have also been game changers! What helps you feel ready for surgery or medical procedures?
