I think through simple rituals, that engage our senses, we are able to push a reset button in our mind and connect to our roots. Smoke is smelled, seen, tasted and felt, it’s used in lots of faiths to clean and heal. We partook in this Buddhist cleansing and healing ritual at the Sensō-ji temple in Tokyo Japan. Last year we were in Fatima Portugal, a Catholic pilgrimage site, where we did something similar with candles. The smells, bells, traditions and prayers of my faith connect me to my mom and her mom and so on. We all have a lot of cheerleader on the other side.
