A group of fishermen prepare to depart in the early morning. They’re going out to sea nearby, but if they don’t catch enough fish, they will move to another camp.
Due in part to overexploitation, the number of fish removed from West African waters has tripled since just the 1970s. Among the many negative consequences, this excess has left small-scale fishermen from countries throughout the region worried about their future. In this series, photographer @adrienne_surprenant shares work drawn from her visit to Mouanko, a small community in Cameroon of roughly 3,000 fishermen, which increasingly finds itself under the strain of rising social and environmental tensions.
