Dearest book-community, .
Let's talk. Or: Let this Hobbit rant .
Let's start with "thanks". I'm so grateful to have "met" and talked to some amazing people, witches, and wizards here in this community. I'm a loner who has a hard time making friends. And I'm so happy to have found a Hobbit family here. And this family is from all over the world, you are Bagginses & Proudfeet 😉, Skywalkers & Groots. We're a funky (jep, I said funky) group that believes in different gods and Yoda- that consists of Atheists, Muslims, Buddhists & those who are 'with the force' 😂. I freaking love that .
What this little rant is about is the fact that we all like different books, different genres, different types of heroes, narrators and topics. That's wonderful. Trying out a new genre, reading out of your comfort zone, supporting new authors and lesser known books is something I love seing in this community. Supporting diversity in books is something I like to see here, too .
But let's also focus on accepting different opinions. That goes way beyond my 'I don't like Jay Gatsby' & you know it! Let's speak out when something is on our mind but let's do so with respect and empathy. Let's promote diversity & try to give EVERYONE a voice here, thus criticise something that might be harmful or offensive➡ But do that we must😉 by first informing ourselves about the topic we intend to discuss (and I mean reading more than one angry tumblr rant), by showing empathy & considering that everyone here has a story behind the account, is a human being. Speaking for a marginalised group (that you are not a part of yourself), and thus giving a voice to someone who might not have a huge platform here, can be great and important, but please think about (in each case) whether you are really in a position to speak for said group .
Sometimes the interwebs is used to spread hate/anger/confusion, often without realising that we do so. It's mostly not our intention.➡ I'm not talking about you who's currently reading this .
What I wanna say is: Can't we all be more Luna Lovegood please? .
Yeah, I used this #shelfie because these kind of things reach a bigger crowd #sorrynotsorry
