Feeling extremely blessed right about now. Next month I get to chair some absolutely fabulous literary events.
Starting Oct 2 with the London launch of Saraba Magazine's first print issue, Transitions. The line-up is brilliant - @ayobamidebayo, @emmaiduma, Irenosen Okojie and Abiola Oni. And I have the absolute pleasure of chairing a conversation with these writers. How cool is that? Can't.Wait. It's at the Khalili Lecture Theatre at SOAS. Still on my opening sentences ting. Here's one from 'Dust' by Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor. First published in Kenya in 2013 by @kwanitrust and then by Knopf in 2014. This has been on my bookshelf for a while now. Purely because it feels like the kind of book that needs my undivided attention, and one in which every detail should be taken in and savoured. I also feel like it might be a difficult read, but difficult in a good way. A read that will challenge me. So, I wait until I am ready to devote myself completely to this novel which follows a family in Kenya, is set against the backdrop of Kenya's 2007 elections and even goes back as far as the Mau Mau uprisings in the 50s. #openingsentence #openingline #firstlines #africanliterature #womenwriters #africanwomenwriters #kenya #kwani #aaknopf #bookshy #bookshybooks #africanbooks #yvonneowuor #yvonneadhiamboowuor

August 2016 edition of @chimurenga_sa Chronic: The Corpse Exhibition and Older Graphic Stories. Artists were invited to produce graphic adaptations of stories (many were science fiction and fantasy stories by African writers). The result - a stunning publication, with haunting but beautiful illustrations.
Graphic stories include: Catherine Anyango's illustration of Boubacar Boris Diop's 'Kaveena'; Loyiso Mkize going back in time to Marikana seconds before the first shot was fired; Nikhil Singh's illustration of Kojo Laing's 'Major Gentl and the Achimota Wars'; Phumle April's 'Avions de Nuit' which makes nightly flights across the Atlantic carrying passengers into slavery; and Brent Hayes Edwards' 'Afro-Horn' illustrated by Native Maqari.
Music: Intro of Kid Cudi's 'Scott Mescudi vs. The World'

It's Friday. Yay! Plus it's sunny today! Double Yay! Summer has been all over the place (as always) ... and who knows how long the sun will be out for. They say opening sentences are important. So, once in a while I'll select a book from my library and share the opening sentence(s). This is from Cheikh Hamidou Kane's 'Ambiguous Adventure' - a book that came to me by way of recommendation from a friend. It follows Samba Diallo - a devout student in an Islamic school in Senegal. His teacher - Thierno. His family eventually sends him to Paris where he studies Philosophy. Initially he is excited at the prospect of being in Paris, but over time, Islamic (and African) values and culture clash with Western ones.

A glimpse into my library. This is also (without a doubt) one of my top reads. It was first published in 2009 by Zim publishers 'amaBooks. Set mainly in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, it tells the story of two women - Ellie who is just trying to make sense of her life, and her grandmother, Evelyn, whom she had a really close relationship with. The story also goes back and forth in time (between 1940s and 2000s), to expertly weave these two different women's accounts of their lives and paints possibly one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read. #africanliterature #amabooks #zimbabwe #historicalfiction #bookshy #bookshybooks #rhodesia #africanhistoricalfiction #africanbooks #africanpublishers #fiction #booksofinsta

A glimpse into my library. One of my all time favourite books. Set in Algeria, Younes - our narrator - is recounting his life, and starts the story when he is 9 living with his family on their farm. After a series of unfortunate events, Younes is taken in by his affluent uncle. From then, things change as he becomes known as Jonas, and spends the rest of his life in conflict with his Arab and Muslim identity (Younes) and his more European one (Jonas). #africanliterature #mylibrary #northafricanliterature #bookshy #bookshybooks #bookstagram #books #litetature #booksoninsta #fiction #algeria #favereads
