❔QOTD: do you always write reviews of the book you've read?
.
.
.
h i y a c r e a t u r e s ! Spring is finally here but I'm stuck in Autumnland 🤷‍♀️. What can I say, I love cinnamon 🤷‍♀️.
Anyway, I started this account with the purpose of sharing recs and reviews but I feel like all I do here is posting bookish photos. And, I mean, I guess that's another mean to the same end, but I would like to share more quick reviews in my captions.
The thing is: I'm lazy and I haven't reviewed most of the books I've read 🙈.
Like these three:
#Mythos by #StephenFry ;
#TheSecretHistory by #DonnaTartt ;
#TheSongofAchilles by #MadelineMiller .
They might be some of my favourite books ever and I never wrote their reviews. Shame on me.
All I can say is that if you happen to like:
-greek myhtology;
-rotten and extremely humanised characters;
-amazing prose;
then you'll love these three books. I'll add Percy Jackson (if you're into sassy main characters and diversity) and Circe (I haven't received my copy yet but anything written by Madeline Miller is gold) for good measure.
Hope I helped 🙇‍♀️.

Our #BookTuesday pick for April 17 is #OnlyChild by @rhiannonnavin. Grab a copy today!

Be sure to join us for our #authortalk with #RhiannonNavin on Monday, April 23 at 6:30PM at #ForestHills Community Library!

Navin’s debut #novel, released just eight days before the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, “offers a new perspective on trauma and reminds readers that hope can be found in even the darkest moments," says @real_simple.

Squeezed into a coat closet with his classmates and teacher, first grader Zach Taylor can hear gunshots ringing through the halls of his school. A gunman has entered the building, taking nineteen lives and irrevocably changing the very fabric of this close-knit community.

While Zach's mother pursues a quest for justice against the shooter's parents, holding them responsible for their son's actions, Zach retreats into his super-secret hideout and loses himself in a world of books and art.

Armed with his newfound understanding, and with the optimism and stubbornness only a child could have, Zach sets out on a captivating journey towards healing and forgiveness, determined to help the adults in his life rediscover the universal truths of love and compassion needed to pull them through their darkest hours. #bookrecommendation #bookrec #bookstagram #instabook

Our #BookTuesday pick for April 10 is #PatriotNumberOne: American Dreams in #Chinatown by #LaurenHilgers.

Be sure to read our interview with Lauren Hilgers and Zhuang Liehong in the March/April 2018 issue of #QueensLibraryMagazine, and you can meet Lauren at our #authortalk at #Flushing Community Library on April 20 at 1:30PM!

In 2014, in a snow-covered house in Flushing, #Queens, a village revolutionary from Southern #China considered his options. Zhuang Liehong was the son of a fisherman, the former owner of a small tea shop, and the spark that had sent his village into an uproar—pitting residents against a corrupt local government. Using the alias Patriot Number One, he had stoked a series of pro-democracy protests, hoping to change his home for the better. Instead, sensing an impending crackdown, Zhuang and his wife, Little Yan, left their infant son with relatives and traveled to America. With few contacts and only a shaky grasp of English, they had to start from scratch.

In “Patriot Number One,” Lauren Hilgers tells us the role she played in Zhuang's story and follows this dauntless family through a world hidden in plain sight: a byzantine network of employment agencies and language schools, of underground asylum brokers and illegal dormitories that Flushing's #Chinese community relies on for survival. And as the irrepressibly opinionated Zhuang and the more pragmatic Little Yan pursue legal status and struggle to reunite with their son, we also meet others piecing together a new life in Flushing.

With a novelist's eye for character and detail, Hilgers captures the joys and indignities of building a life in a new country—and the stubborn allure of the #AmericanDream. Grab a copy today! #bookrecommendation #bookrec #bookstagram #instabook

❔QOTD: make your own character candle and OTP candle.
My character candle would smell like righteousness, recklessness and stubborness. Name: 'On va voir';
My OTP candle would smell of memories, gunpowder and metal. Name: 'The End of the Line'.
I suppose you've already guessed who were inspired to, am I right? I'm predictable but I love them too much to care 🤷‍♀️.

This little galaxy in a jar came with my last @owlcrate box. It was inspired by Hanna Connelly from #TheIlluminaeFiles by authors #JayKristoff and #AmieKaufman and made by @wickandfable
It smells lile sweet honeydew 😋. And here's also a sneak peek of the @nerdy.post print that I'll soon feature in one of my future post!
And on the left you can admire my partial #TBR pile 🙈. I've never being so bad at keeping it in check but I promised to read first the books that came with the #Owlcrate boxes so I'm a little behind. I'm planning to dent it once and for all now that I've finished Heart of Iron (review to come, btw. Stay tuned 😉). .

Our #BookTuesday pick for April 3 is #Chicago: A Novel by #DavidMamet.

David Mamet, the Oscar-nominated #screenwriter of #TheUntouchables and the #PulitzerPrize-winning #playwright of #GlengarryGlenRoss, has created a bracing, kaleidoscopic page-turner that roars through the Windy City's underground on its way to a thunderclap of a conclusion. Here is not only his first #novel in more than two decades, but the #book he has been building to for his whole career. Mixing some of his most brilliant fictional creations with actual figures of the era, suffused with trademark "Mamet Speak," and exploring—as no other #writer can—questions of honor, deceit, revenge, and devotion, "Chicago" is that rarest of literary creations: a book that combines spectacular elegance of craft with a kinetic wallop as fierce as the February wind gusting off Lake Michigan. Our #BookTuesday pick for March 27 is Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I've Loved by @katecbowler.

#KateBowler is a professor at #DukeDivinitySchool with a modest #Christian upbringing, but she specializes in the study of the #prosperitygospel, which sees fortune as a blessing from God and misfortune as a mark of God’s disapproval. At thirty-five, everything in her life seems to point toward “blessing.” She is thriving in her job, married to her high school sweetheart, and loves life with her newborn son—and then she is diagnosed with stage 4 #coloncancer.

The prospect of her own mortality forces Kate to realize that she has been tacitly subscribing to the prosperity gospel, living with the conviction that she can control the shape of her life with “a surge of determination.” But Kate is very sick, and no amount of positive thinking will shrink her tumors. What does it mean to die, she wonders, in a society that insists everything happens for a reason? Kate is stripped of this certainty only to discover that without it, life is hard, but beautiful in a way it never has been before. Frank and funny, dark and wise, “Everything Happens for a Reason” gives us Kate’s irreverent, hard-won observations on dying and the ways it has taught her to live. #bookrecommendation #bookrec #bookstagram #instabook #EverythingHappens #LiesIveLoved

Our #BookTuesday pick for March 20 is #SurpriseMe by @sophiekinsellawriter.

After ten years together, Sylvie and Dan have a comfortable home, fulfilling jobs, and beautiful twin girls, and they communicate so seamlessly they finish each other's sentences. They have a happy #marriage and believe they know everything there is to know about each other. Until it's casually mentioned to them that they could be together for another 68 years…and panic sets in.

They decide to bring surprises into their marriage to keep it fresh and fun. But in their pursuit of Project Surprise Me, mishaps arise, with disastrous and comical results. Gradually, surprises turn to shocking truths. And when a scandal from the past is uncovered, they begin to wonder if they ever really knew each other at all.

With a colorful cast of eccentric characters, razor-sharp observations, and her signature wit and charm, #SophieKinsella presents a humorous yet moving portrait of a marriage, and shows us that hidden layers in a close relationship are often yet to be discovered. Our #BookTuesday pick for March 13 is #TheGreatAlone by @KristinHannahAuthor.
#KristinHannah’s latest #NewYorkTimes #bestseller is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature.

Ernt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision: he will move his family north, to #Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America's last true frontier.

Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents' passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown.

At first, Alaska seems to be the answer to their prayers. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the Allbrights' lack of preparation and dwindling resources. But as winter approaches and darkness descends on Alaska, Ernt's fragile mental state deteriorates and the family begins to fracture. Soon, the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within, and Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own. In the wild, there is no one to save them but themselves. Our #BookTuesday pick for March 6 is Brave by @rosemcgowan. Grab a copy today!

In her raw, honest, and poignant #memoir-#manifesto, #RoseMcGowan gives a no-holds-barred, pull-no-punches indictment of #Hollywood, which she calls a “cult,” and the abuses she suffered at the hands of an exploitative, misogynistic entertainment industry. "One of the greatest tricks that the #patriarchy plays on women is to deliberately destabilize them, then use their instability as a reason to disbelieve them,” writes #MichelleGoldberg in the #NewYorkTimesBookReview. “Much of ‘Brave’ reads like the diary of a woman driven half-mad by abusive men who assume no one will listen to her. In this case, the truth was finally—and, for McGowan, triumphantly—exposed, but reading ‘Brave,’ I kept thinking about how many more women must be written off as crazy and crushed under the weight of secrets no one wants to hear.” #bookrecommendation #bookrec #bookstagram #instabook

Our #BookTuesday pick for February 20 is #DownTheRiverUntoTheSea by #WalterMosley.

Joe King Oliver was one of the NYPD's finest investigators until, dispatched to arrest a well-heeled car thief, he is framed for assault by his enemies within the NYPD, a charge which lands him in solitary at Rikers Island. A decade later, King is a private detective, running his agency with the help of his teenage daughter. Broken by the brutality he suffered and committed in equal measure while behind bars, his work and his daughter are the only light in his solitary life. When he receives a card in the mail from the woman who admits she was paid to frame him all those years ago, King realizes that he has no choice but to take his own case: figuring out who on the force wanted him disposed—and why. "Mosley writes with great power here about themes that have permeated his work: institutional racism, political corruption, and the ways that both of these issues affect not only society at large but also the inner lives of individual men and women….It's the perfect moment for Mosley to unveil an exciting new hero and a series set in the present and confronting the issues that drive today's headlines,” says #ALA’s Booklist.
