This is Vaughn, and he's about to start his formal training as a Hearing Ear Dog. Our puppies get recalled for their advanced skills training around 12 to 15 months of age. We - puppy raisers - get 2 weeks notice, so once they start getting close to this age, there's always a little bit trepidation every time the phone rings!
Isn't it hard on the pups to say goodbye to us? I get this question a lot! Well, the truth is it's way harder on us humans than it is on them! They're always tail waggy and excited when they get to the school - I think for an adolescent dog it's a pretty awesome place to be: they each get their own kennel roommate and they'll spend their days for the next several months being stimulated, learning, and earning (treats - they don't work for free!). Heck, it sure beats going to work with mum or dad! So yeah, the truth is, the pups are always ready for this next step in their lives, even if we never are.
Thanks to @theclayjacobson for this beautiful pic of Vaughn!
