Einstein said, "any fool can know, the point is to understand." I echo this statement everyday in my role as a SuperNurse Educator! Here's a huge mistake I see nursing students do, and I also see nursing instructors encourage this😡: Study by committing things to memory. This method will RARELY serve you, and it sure as hell will do you no good when you find yourself in a critical thinking scenario🙅🏽. Why? Because you don't KNOW WHY? You simply remember facts that you've read, heard or written down. But you don't know WHY something is! If you can tell me that right sided heart failure will cause JVD, but you can't tell me WHY, you don't understand. If you can tell me that ketonuria is present in DKA but you can't tell me WHY that happens, you don't understand. If you can tell me that older people get confused when they have a bacterial infection, but you can't tell me WHY, you don't understand. So often a student will tell me something about a disease, disorder, procedure...anything, and when I ask them, "so why does that happen?" The response is, "I don't know why. I never really learned that, I just remember this."🤔😰And let me be clear-- it's OK if you don't know! But, now you have to do something about it!💡Bring it back to the basics and build your way up!🛠That's understanding, that's patho.🙃THIS is the level of knowledge you must have in order to critically think. Knowledge + Nursing intuition= critical thinking. .
