Throwback to 16 years ago and experiencing this amazing festival during the winter solstice in Saqsaywaman, Peru (near Cusco) in honor of the Incan sun god: Inti Raymi. It technically happens on June 24 but we are close enough... Back then, we met travelers of Incan ancestry from Bolivia, Ecuador, other parts of Peru and other neighboring countries who came to Cusco just for this festival. It’s a big deal and the night celebrations were full of laughter, dancing, drinking and food. Cusco is also a great starting point to get acclimated to the elevation prior to hiking the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu and to explore other fantastic Incan ruins in the Sacred Valley. For food lovers, it’s also a great starting point to try delicious Peruvian cuisine.
